Well then, I have this itch which needs to be scratched, I am sure many of your suffer from the same condition. The upgrade itch is strong!

I currently have a AMD 960T unlocked to 6 core @ 4ghz / CPU-NB 3ghz paired with 8gn Sammy RAM @ 7-8-8-21 1612mhz and a GTX580 @ 900mhz all water cooled. I have 1 x EX280, 1 x EX240 with a XSPC 720 Pump / res combo. I will also be getting a EX120 to put in the loop next week.

However I really do need some extra CPU grunt for BF3/4 and recording / streaming. My CPU is the bottleneck on 64 man maps whilst recording / playing. So I want to go Intel and get an i7 which will certainly benefit BF4 and BF3 over an i5 when recording / streaming.

I will be overclocking the CPU as far as poss, what do people think, 3770K or a 4770K. I may have the balls to delid a 4770, it looks harder to delid a 3770 so that may be one pro. Obviously tho, the 4*** will suffer worse from not being able to dissipate the heat either delided or not.

Decisions decisions hmmm...Help plz

got to be latest and greatest really, makes no sense to buy an ivy now... just delid the 4770k and stick it underwater.

Another vote for the 4770k, might as well go for the latest kit. Regarding delidding, youve got to be that extra bit careful with a haswell chip when removing the ihs. Due to the addition of an extra line of components close to the edge of the pcb. Direct die contact watercooling would work nicely with it too. Iirc, illuz is running such a setup on a 3770k at 5ghz.

I'm running a delidded 3770k, although I retained the IHS with liquid metal between.
5GHz 24/7 is easy and temps are well controlled using a 240 Rad. I see mid 60's to early 70's running prime.

My thoughts on the choice of chip... Well bearing in mind you need a new motherboard and CPU it would seem daft to go for the older Ivy and Z77 setup when there is very little difference in price for the 4770K and an Z87 unless you can pick up a good board and CPU second hand and save money. Personally I doubt the second hand Z77 and Ivy will be worth it.

Go for the 4770K and enjoy.

Kinda wish id went haswell now as well tbh, my previous 3570k wasnt a great cpu, (1.3200v for 4.5ghz). Current 3770k is even worse, still not fully stable despite using 1.330v in bios. It passes ibt on standard 10 runs at 4.5ghz, but temps get to 82c max on high end air cooling. Despite this it's still throwing up loads of whea errors and causing program/game crashes.

Well thank you guys, I will have a long hard think as to whether I will upgrade this week. May be able to hold off a little longer, but we're probably only talking a matter of a few weeks, might save for a slightly better mobo that the one in mind.

Gigabyte Z87-D3HP Intel Z87

Will be going 4770K + Z87 then :D

Bai bai my well loved AMD

Looks like a nice board, id only spend more if you need specific features, such as the ability to use both xfire/sli should you ever go that route.

Single gfx only for me. I think the CPU rather than mobo tends to be the limiting factor in this socket. Does what I need so no point splashing out on an Asus Rog this time

Don't get me wrong. I would love another ROG board. My current Crosshair V formula is just crazily good. However as the only reason I would go for the ROG board is the colour, I don't feel it is a worthwhile expense. I have done the whole perfect colour coordination thing. Time to be a bit more practical, and frankly a new CPU and Mobo is very much stretching the budget as it is.

I know I know, I really do :D

Would love a ROG board BB but I really don't see the need this time over say the MSI G45 gaming as Haswell seems to matter far less which mobo and far more whether the gods of the silicon lottery are smiling or not.

The MSI is black / red and might be back in stock by the time I have the cash.

Got maximus Vi gene myself, been good so fair and overclock well apart from a "pop" sound "squealing" noise when turning the pc on and off, check Asus rog forum.

Msi G45 gaming would be my choice if I wasnt building on a MATX case.

IIRC Haswel has VRM ON DIE, which IS going to complicate things, and i heard it has some issues with sleep and idle states. And that it simply dont overclock as well overall. I would be safe and get a 3770k. Haswel is only 5-10% faster anyways. And if you could make up for that in higher clock speeds on Ivy then you're golden.

Correct me Haswel people if im wrong about my speculations.

Ive owned both, the hw chip is slightly faster clock for clock. My stock 4770k matched my 4.2ghz 3770k at 4.2ghz in a few benchmarks. Also had the ivy at 4.5, hw runs much hotter though.
