3770K or wait for Haswell?

Hi all,

Looking for some advice as to what I should do.
I am interested in getting the 3770K, and whilst my primary uses are for gaming, I do dabble in more CPU driven tasks from time to time, hence my desire to get a hyper threading enabled CPU, I know the 3570K is generally just as good at gaming in most scenarios.

I am ready to pull the trigger on a 3770K but with Haswell being just round the corner, I am struggling with purchasing a CPU and chipset soon to be superseded.

From a gaming perspective, I already have 2 7950's, so Haswell's touted GPU improvements will not benefit me, so my reasons for waiting would purely be to have the latest version with a little extra performance (10-15% roughly from what sketchy info I can find, and a bit more with AVX2), minor power saving improvements as I will undoubtedly overclock it :D, and a potential upgrade path down the line on the 1150 platform.

My current CPU is OK (1090T), but I am itching to upgrade and want to move to Intel if I do.

Thanks for any advice and input,
Chris.

The 3770k is a good CPU and you would not be disapointed but for the sake of a few months you may as well hang on for Haswell, plus the i7 version may oc better than the 3770k.

If you have a lot of CPU driven tasks, have you considered a 3930k on X79. The 3930k may be getting on a bit but it will blow away anything mainstream that Haswell has to offer. The downside is its quite an expensive option compared to a 3770k.

Difficult one, is it common for teething problems with a new CPU release and do new motherboard sockets need a few months to mature or are they pretty good from the off?

Chris.

Few months? thought it was April...

Its December now.:D

Just grab the 3770k. There's no point waiting for what's just around the corner because there's always something to hang on for.

Yes if he really needs the extra performance now grab the 3770k or if he can wait April is not that far away.

What I have noticed with i7s regardless of what generation they come from for normal use its hard to tell them apart.

Then something better will be due out in June......bite the bullet and buy now, or you'll always be waiting for the next best thing

this ^

there is always something new, faster and better

if you wait, youll end up waiting forever

when you need to buy , buy

If u already using 1155 mobo then buy 3770k but if u wait for haswell then u buy cpu and mobo as haswell will be 1150 not 1155 it cost a lots as it cheaper to buy 3770k and keep your mobo

Except there won't be anything better out in June, we'd be looking at 2014 at the least for anything new in the mainstream segment from Intel.
I don't get the "There's always something around the corner", only time I've ever seen it actually mean anything was 480-580 and that was only because the 480 was so freaking delayed.

My reasoning to wait until April was based on the fact I will also need to source a new motherboard to even use Ivy.

I know the LGA1155 platform will be fine for a long time coupled with a 3770K but if i'm going to shell out in excess of £400, I want it to be the best bang for my buck and I can't help feeling that I will be short changed in under 6 months, albeit probably by only 15%, prehaps the TIM will be better on Haswell :D
