Just a quick question , my 3770k is stable with offset mode (z77 sabertooth)but if i want to overclock higher i need to force a constant voltage , is there a reason for this or are there some settings i can try ?

Offsets base voltage is dictated by the individual CPU and then you add or subtract volts to gain stability under load.

The problem with this dynamic approach is that when you r reaching the limit of the chips overclocking unstable voltages can cause problems of instability. This is why a fixed voltage works better as what ever the frequency the CPU has enough juice to stay stable heavy loads instantaneously applied.

This ^

If they implemented a function which dictated what frequency/load requested what voltage it maybe better but when the board is fluctuating it's all over the place and it's very difficult to dictate what it needs where. I could never get it stable enough on the x68 platform so decided from there on in it was a bit of a gimmick.

manual voltage is the way forward still.

im stable at 4.8ghz 3770k with offset

its only extreme oc's you might be unstable imo,if you spend time setting it up right then it should be stable using offset

Well this is the point, as ideally it's extreme clocks with high degrading voltage that you'd want offset as it would reduce wear on the cpu.

Mild oc you're unlikely to notice any difference with adequate cooling! It's gimmicky and fluctuates madly on some boards.

Come on man!!! wear on your CPU. They are designed to last for ten years plus. Who keeps em anywhere near that long. Dont use torture tests to kill em off and fixed voltage is totally fine.

I meant the only reason you'd honestly need offset is really if you wanted to reduce load on really high volts! Wouldn't personally care about wear was just making the point that I reckon offset Is a gimmic for most overclocks :)
