Today i purchased a 4930k to replace my 3770k. I would like to build a little media server in my home, should I just use the 3770k or selling it and get something smaller?

I doubt you'll get all that much back for it, despite it being a good chip. It is overkill for a media server though. Any chance you can steal a smaller chip off another PC in the household and give them the 3770k?

A 3770k might be a bit overkill for a media server now, but at least it'll last for years without needing to upgrade ;). You'll probably get in the region of £175 if you decide to sell the chip.

Build a small media machine and spread your wings and host more stuff yourself?

I have a small Acer Revo as a media server running Vortex Box OS as I have a squeezebox setup which is great.

Pitty you arent a member of the MM i would have part traded my 2500K for the 3770K :(

Im afraid I dont know what MM is, I did google it but no luck. I have decided to give the CPU to a friend. Shame coz it is a beast, delidded 4.8@ 1.36v

Nice chip! Bout the same as mine :)

the MM is a members market area on the forums for people with over 1000 posts, it's a good way to sell on components and is pretty cheap!

Oh cool, well i will wait till I hit 1000 then lol.

Put my 4930 in now :D Will benchmark tomorrow

Am i right thinking the 4930 is the 6 core with out the onboard gpu?

If it is dunna bother with benching with games an bench with apps/programs, ive read some benches on games an it was lower than a 4770K, that's if it is the 6 core chip, please post the results as the 6 core was the one i was going to get but the results i found put me off.

Sorry if it sounds like im flaming/hating on the chip.

Sorry for the off topic question but would a 3570K be good enough to play BF3/BF4 without any bottleneck or low FPS? Building arig for my mate and I don't know if to get the 3570K or the 3770K.

Sorry for the late response guys, I have been extremely busy!

This 4930k is a 6 core 12 threads. I will bench games soon. I only got the chip because I record game footage with DXtory. I got Avermedia Liver HD capture but I play in 120hz and this is not supported so my only options was a better CPU.

have you seen any difference in bf4 with your new chip?

I have seen a difference with BF4, I have noticed that BF4 does use all cores/threads. Which is nice! It does seem smooth as butter with my 290x. TBH if you are just gaming with no recording then dont bother with this chip, 3770k/4770k will be more than enough. But recording with DXtory whilst playing BF4 with 3770k @ 4.8, you can feel you are recording if that makes any sense and the CPU usage is up in the 85-90% range. With the 4930k @ 4.4, recording with DXtory is great, I dont 'feel' like i'm recording and feels fast, snappy and smooth. And the CPU usage is around the 40-60% mark which is great! I even tried recording 1080p 60fps and still smooth!

But of course this comes at a hefty price tag on the 4930k over the 4770k.

I notice that BF4 is using more than just a few cores, and if you have an AMD card for mantle then HT will benefit you a lot more.
