Looking to get some opinions on the following as it's been quite a few years since I last done an upgrade, the 3770k has done me very well but I'm getting the itch to do a full upgrade :)

Typically I use the machine on a day to day basis for both gaming and normal work stuff (excel, word, webbrowsers, RDP etc.). When I do game its typically at maximum settings or close to as I get to enjoy 1440p goodness on my LG 34UM95 (3440x1440@65hz) - may also upgrade to a 144hz screen but that's something else to consider later :D

Current setup:
Case: Caselabs Bullet BH8 - Maxed out with fans from Noctua's REDUX lineup (top 4x140 pulling in, front 2x140 pulling in, rear 1x120 exhaust)
PSU: Seasonic X-Series 1250W Gold PSU
CPU Cooling - Noctua NH-U9S with 2x NF-A9 fans
Motherboard: Replacing - ASRock Z77 OC Formula EATX Motherboard LGA 1155
CPU: Replacing - Intel Core i7-3770K Quad Core Processor Ivy Bridge
RAM: Replacing - Samsung Green 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz 30nm Dual/Quad Channel Kit
Graphics: Inno3D GEFORCE GTX 1080TI TWIN X2 11264MB GDDR5X PCI-EXPRESS GRAPHICS CARD
Boot SSD: Replacing - Samsung 256GB 850 PRO SSD
Scratch SSD: Samsung 840 EVO Series 750gb Solid State SATA Drive
Gaming SSD: Samsung MZ-76E2T0B/EU 2 TB 860 EVO Sata III 64L V NAND Solid State Drive

Replacement components:
My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,020.42 (includes shipping: £10.50)

The problem I most have is cooling anything newer due to the limited height of the case - I've seriously considered a custom water setup for this (it's what it was designed for) but I'm a complete noob when it comes to that - I have tried AIO in the case (Coolermaster 280mm & Corsair 280mm) but really didn't get on with them, especially since both failed after about 3-4 months .. bad run of luck as everything fails.

Hardware upgrade choices
CPU - Not as great as the 9900K and slightly better than the 9700K but should be easier to cool, plus taken the delid version to give additional cooling headroom;
RAM - Tried and tested RAM;
Motherboard - Was looking at ASRock but wanted something easier to play around with this time. Plus, aesthetically, the Maximus XI range don't look all that good :(
SSD - May as well make the jump and enjoy some faster speeds, the slots are there to be used.
CPU Cooler - I'm trying to keep this as it's a great little unit and should cope with 200w+ of TDP based on Noctua's testing.

Very open to other suggestions on improvements etc. and also AMD equivalent setups as I've been on both sides of the fence in the past. Budget wise looking at between £1,000-£1,300

Cheers

why are you spending the best part of a grand on old tech? 8086 is pointless when 9900k is the same price (intel route)
best idea is to wait and see what ryzen 3xxx series brings to the table. announcement in a fortnight or so?

Definitely the best option imo, the AMD Keynote at CES is on the 9th of January so just over a week.

Totally fair call guys, won't be pulling the trigger right this instant anyway. Wise to keep an eye on Ryzen 3 considering what they've done in the past two :)

@orbitalwalsh, cheers for the critique and alternatives .. shall look into those as well :)
