*sniff sniff*

I smell EA.

"The next day began at 7:30 am and ended at 7:00 pm. It took 10 1/2 hours to find out that they still could not pay him and didn't have any answers. On the May 16th-21st, my husband returned day after day, told to drive in to work and promised pay, but every day came home empty handed after late meetings and more promises. The longest day was 12 hours and each day we were spending more money on gas and more hope going out the window. During this time, we were also trying to keep our children from worrying while they spent each day hoping to catch a glimpse of their dad before they went to sleep. "

Sounds like an EA victim to me.

I feel sorry for all the people that lost their job but 38 was far to ambitious for a new studio. They should have started small but they went straight for an mmo and 300 hour rpg two very expensive games to make. I think they believed they couldn't fail with the all star team they had but they were wrong and I hope people will learn from this mess.

Combination of the EA effect and trying to spread yourself too thin, a shame as there's glimpses of brilliant potential in AoR however the game was just unfinished.

Not 38 Studios fault. It's very much the Gaming Industry in general as it's very up and down (with very big downs).

This is why if you get offered a job which means you take your whole family away from everything they know that you temporarily move into a hotel for a few weeks to a month. Especially when it's this kind of company where one failed game could mean you aren't getting paid.

yea i bet origin did it

EA had nothing to do with 38 stuidios? are you smoking crack?

EA were their primary publisher. We all know what happens to any company EA gets their claws into, 38 got thoroughly violated and thrown out the back of EA's corporate transit van.

Sad to see this happen and I feel bad for Curt Shilling and his company/project. I used to play a game with the guy and talk to him on Ventrilo! Ouch.

Most of the big articles I've read have pretty much pointed to bad management and Curt himself..but anyway, it's a damn shame as Kingdoms of Amalur was a decent game, they were just way too optimistic for sales on a new IP and spending wads of loaned cash on making a MMO didn't help.

if EA didnt fund them and it seems they didnt they would have had very little control

If I've understood the timeline correctly, they moved in December but didn't encounter the financial problems until May (albeit the job wasn't working out quite as hoped). Staying in a hotel for a month would have just meant more bills to pay and caused more disruption to his kids schooling due to having to move mid-term.

Not saying your logic isn't sound, but it wouldn't have helped in this case.
