Hey all

I need your advice, im doing to do a small upgrade from a p4 3.0ghz and after seeing the 3700+ on this week only i was thinking of getting one of them with a 1800xt. Eventually i want to upgrade to a conroe so i was wandering if its worth the extra £10 to go AM2 so i can buy DDR2 RAM instead of DDR so i wont have to buy any for the conroe in the future?

Do they clock well?
Will i be able to find watercooling CPU blocks or decent Heatsinks?

Thanks

Jamie

I just bought a 3500+ and X1800 XT last week. Very pleased with the performance results. Pretty much running everything on full with all the eye candy. BF2 and Doom3 are a treat, especially on my new widescreen monitor.

I went the AM2 route as I'm on a budget. You should be able to get the new AMD chip architectures to be released to fit the AM2 board so I chose to wait a few months and then investigate Dual Core / Conroe equivalent then. Prices will drop as well. The way I see it is that the 3500+ AM2 is more than enough to handle most of the modern games / apps and I'm not willing to pay over the odds just to have the latest and greatest.

Not sure about overclocking as the mobo I haven't tried it, not too interested either. Just buy a new CPU in 6-8 months time if things lag.

If you have some spare pc3200 ram (from the P4 perhaps) then i would go s939 A64 3700+ SD (these do overclock very well) otherwise going AM2 is the better option, becuase as you say you can use the same ram for Conroe.

Yeah ive got 2 sticks of 512 RAM but its cheap stuff that i bought like 4 years ago, ive been meaning to buy 2gb DDR dual channel but for around the same price i could get DDR2 which means i wont need to buy it in the future. So you reckon i should get the AM2 3800+?

What would be your budget on AM2 against your spend on Conroe? Work it out then determine if the difference is worth it when you could wait a few months and get more value for the extra spend.

When i get conroe ill be getting the E6600 but that won't be until around xmas time. At the moment im running P4 3.0ghz with 9800 pro. If i got the AM2 i could buy DDR2 aswell instead of buying some new DDR now and more DDR2 later.

Should i just wait?
