Cheers - I was thinking perhaps its only the Opterons which are true 64 bit (as opposed to the 2 x 32 bit tom foolery - I won't pretend I know a lot about it because I don't!). So I can go ahead and install?

No.. there is no such thing as 2x32 bit tom foolery. All opterons and Athlon64s are based on the x86_64 code set, which is 32bit with extensions, so you can use standard 32bit instructions as well as 64bit instructions, so it can run 32bit code natively unlike Itanium which is a pure 64bit processor and has a completely re-writted instruction set. All the new 64bit pentium chips are using the EM64T, which is x86_64 by any other name
