Just wondering if this upgrade would be worth it? i have a 3060ti at the moment and the msi x470 gaming plus max mb which im sure will take the 5 series if i update the bios.

Thanks

Which games do you play?

What is your fps target @ 1440p?
Yep, play at 1440p and have 165hrz monitor, mostly fps games like battlefield 5/2042...will also be interested in playing fps games that may be released this year, hogwarts, cyberpunk 2077, modern warfare 2 etc

Would also like the cpu i get to be ok with a better gpu should i upgrade it in the future, like a 4070 or similar

Thanks

Gpu first at that res.
Thats the thing, the gpu is doing fine, its just 99% of the games i play the gpu usage is hardly in the 90% zone, it drops into the 70s and lower on some games while the cpu usage is up in the 70% usage sometimes, i havent checked to see if a single core is maxed but im sure the cpu is defo holding me back.

The only game i own that has had the gpu usage constantly in the 90s is halo, everything else...nope, in cyberpunk gpu usage drops to 50% sometimes.

Would save a little and get the 5800x3d but not sure if it would work in my motherboard

Thanks

Mmmmm yes, im not planning on moving platform for quite some time yet, maybe it would be more sensible to just save and drop in a 5800x3d, im sure i will need to do a bios update and ive never attempted one before, hopefully it will be easy

Thanks

Done the bios update, it was easy and all seemed to go well, now just have to save for the 5800x3d :)

Thanks for all the suggestions and replies

At 1440p you’ll be GPU bound, CPU upgrade will help with 1% lows.
But like i said, my gpu is not hitting in the 90% usage range in any games constantly except halo, some games it drops down to the 70% usage, and others even more, halo is the only game that has my gpu at 99% usage almost all the time.

Could that be down to my motherboard? or ram? im not sure, im using 3200mhz 16gb ram and a msi gaming plus max x470 motherboard, i just know my gpu should be showing more usage in games

There's something wrong with your setup then, I did a quick benchmark on Cyberpunk which you mentioned you had a problem with. I have a 3900X that is not much stronger than your CPU at gaming with a much stronger GPU (7900XT) and absolutely saturated the GPU at 1440p. This was not at Ultra settings.

Do you have 2 RAM sticks, are they in the correct slots? What does GPU-Z say about how your PCIE lanes are connected?
Tried the cyberpunk benchmark at max settings but this time with NO dlss and was getting MUCH higher gpu usage, had a game on battlefield 2042 but turned dlss off and again much much better with the usage in the 90% range much more.

Think having dlss on was showing the lower usage for some reason even though i get better fps when its on lol anyhow it all seems ok now :)

I do have 2 ram sticks and yes they are in the right slots, also have xmp turned on to get the full out of them

Thanks for your replies and suggestions

DLSS renders your game at a lower resolution. The lower the resolution the more taxing it is on your CPU. By removing DLSS you're effectively increasing the render resolution (not ouput resolution). This is causing your GPU to work harder. If you don't gain any meaningful increase in FPS with DLSS enabled, you're best leaving it disabled.

You likely don't need a CPU upgrade at the moment. Yes, some of your games are CPU demanding, but at 1440p you'd get much more of a result from a better GPU. Some games will never hit 100% GPU utilisation due to software/engine restrictions and overheads. Online multiplayer shooters are renowned for this. So long as you're 90-100% then you'd still benefit from a GPU upgrade on those titles.
Too late lol bought and installed a 5800x3d :) seeing MUCH more fps in all my games now with miles better lows, was an amazing upgrade i think, dont feel like i need to upgrade the gpu for a while now, was thinking of getting a 4070 at some point but not so sure now

May wait for next series of cards, all depends if the itch gets too bad lol but the cpu did make a massive improvement
