3800X2 or Opteron 146 @ 2.9

The opty will be the fastest in single threaded games but the X2 will be better for multi-tasking. The recent steppings of the X2 3800+ from ocuk are quite good for overclocking and most have been doing over 2.6ghz.

New games are being made to use dual core, so this would make dual core better for games as well. There isn't many of these games around just yet though.

I would go for the X2 as this will be more future proof

Are they basically like the 4400x2 then? Do you know anywhere with a comparison chart?

DC Opterons are exactly the same chip as the 4400+, 4800+ & FX60. That's the Toledo core.

The only difference is that Opterons are hand picked for low voltage operation.

I'm sure if you scouted around the usual benchmarking sites you find some comparisons.

In a lot of case, clock for clock, the smaller cache chips will perform on par with the larger cache chips, however when you're in a application that benefits from a lot of cache the Opterons & 4400+ etc will pull ahead.

Thanks for your help. May go for an Opti instead of the 3800x2 then.
