Two of these.

Cheap, Fast, 4gb vram, 512bit bus ideal for 4k, reference pcb, hynix memory, free games and money to spare for blocks.

Yup!

Personally i'd go with the EVGA 6GB SC's but all boils down to his budget.

Same for me.

I have seen games use over 4.5GB at 4K, so I would be concerned that VRAM wouldn't be enough on the 290's and I would also go for the EVGA models. Best CS by a mile.

Will you have enough grunt to exceed 4gb and maintain playable fps though, only two cards it seems doubtful.

Also looking at your 4k monitor review Greg you contradict yourself a bit. Here you are saying a 3gb 780TI can run 4K with ease so if thats the case surely 2/3 4gb 290's would also run it with ease.

No probs and I honestly believe 3GB is enough to run 4K with ease.

Shows a 780Ti Vs the Titan black and no issues there @ 4K.

Bf4,C3,TR,Bioshock,SD, use less than 4Gb@4K on max settings on a 290X if that's any help Rossi, I imagine your going to need 3 or even 4 cards like greg said for playable fps on max IQ.

A 680 can run 4K with ease but if someone is going for a pair of (high end) cards, I assume they want to dial up the settings, so I post according to what they are using/intending on using.

Two 6gb 780's won't have enough grunt to run most games at max settings, regardless of how much vram they have though. Three 780's, possibly. I think with his budget 3x290 4gb cards will offer better fps than 2x780's 6gb cards. If 2x780TI's can't handle it, not sure 2x780 6gb cards will handle it either when the vram limit is not being breeched. Your words and words coming from many review sites.

Thoughts?

Feel free to recommend what you feel Matt but as a 4K user, Titanfall runs well over 4.5GB at 4K and is very playable with max settings on a pair of Titans. I am just recommending on my own experiences and nothing more :)

Just to state, I have no idea if caching is going on or indeed 4.5GB is being used. Someone who uses AMD who has a 4K screen will have to confirm.

Good news Greg, it works fine on a couple of 290's, even all the way up to a resolution of 4320x2560. I'd say you have some serious caching going on. :)

CPU: Intel Core i7 4930k with Corsair H100i Extreme Watercooling - at stock
MEMORY: 16 gb of G.Skill 1600 mhz cas 9
VIDEO CARDS: 2x Radeon R9 290x 4Gb in CrossfireX

In light of this id probably suggest 3x290's 4gb makes more sense 'bang per buck wise' (to quote what the OP asked for) than 2x780's 6gb.

Agree or disagree?

For 4K gaming AMD drivers surprisingly are actual ahead of Nvidia's at the moment, I would go with the 2x 290's that Matt recommend. You can keep one lot of free games and sell the rest to get the cost down if you want.

If you're worried about price, go 3 x 290s with 4GB VRAM

If you want Geforce experience and more VRAM, go 2 x 6GB 780s now and another when your bank recovers (stealing someone else's line from above)

Either way FU and I'm jealous haha
