To those with a 3850, what temps do you get?

I'm currently running my 3850 in a shuttle and it sits at 75C idle!!?! That's hotter than my 8800GT was. It then peaks at 98C load!

What temps are you guys getting?

:p

That's with the ATItool 3d view running.......I'm on water though. Somehow you need to improve the airflow in that tiny case....or get an aftermarket cooling solution.

I was under the impression that the 3850 was very efficient in terms of heat output etc. My 8800GT didn't have this problem and they are compartively hot monsters.

they do run cool...but perhaps the stock cooler is junk. You can try remounting it with some AS5?

stock single slot mate, it's just a bog standard sapphire. not had any mods nor any additional cooling in the case / shuttle itself. fans on smart cpu temps 35 ish

I've got the bog-standard Sapphire too. I can't hit above 730/910 due to heat issues (presumably) without it crashing/locking/red-screening/blue-screening.

what shuttle is it in ? got mine in my rig per sig with no problems

load I never see above 65-68 after an hour or so of UT3

I'm also concerned about the temps (and fan noise) for my 3850 and I say this as an avid silent pc enthusiast. I ended up going for the pre OC'd dual slot version by GeCube and mine idles at around 60-62C. Something clearly is wrong because at idle in Windows the GPU utilisation (as reported by RivaTuner and CCC) is extremely low (0-2%) but for some stupid reason the card runs at the default max core and memory frequency (725 core/900 memory).

One of the reasons I purchased this card was the ATI Powerplay feature which is supposed to reduce the core clock - and in turn the fan noise, power consumption and temperature - to ~300Mhz when the card is in 2D mode (i.e. idling in Windows desktop). I understand this feature has been available on laptops for some time and that there should be a Powerplay tab in Catalyst Control Center but sadly it appears to be missing from mine and indeed yours.

Can anyone elaborate? Is the Powerplay tab visible in your copy of CCC? Is there some other way of enabling it? I've tried reinstalling the 7.11 drivers and CCC but so far no luck and I really don't want to faff about with fan/clock profiles in ATI Tool and Rivatuner.

Heres what my 3850 does (44 idle 89 load) using an atitool artifact scan.

The fan is pretty much inaudible all the way to 50%. Above that it becomes progressively louder. If i set fan at 100%, load is under 60C.

Not sure about enabling it... mine has run like this from first install:

Hmmm, now that's interesting...no Powerplay tab but your GPU clock is at 300Mhz with an idle temp of 47C.

FirebarUK, bugger indeed. Are you in the same boat as me?

Here's a clickable screenie of mine in action.

As you can see the GPU temp is 63C-65C at idle with no GPU activity and the fan spinning at 100%. The fan isn't stupidly loud at 100% like the X1950 but it does have that annoying low frequency hum. I'm really tempted to RMA it but I'm somewhat reluctant to do so now given the time of the year and the resulting but inevitable wait.

Because it artifacted all over the shop, OCUK could only feasibly give me a refund due to a long lead time on the Zotac AMP's.

I've just noticed that I'm at 45C idle now after the card has down-clocked for 2D stuff. Strangely, the duty cycle of the fan only goes over 10% once I hit 85C!?

I'm using Rivatuner to monitor stuff and in the fan section it doesnt allow me to alter the duty cycle;

Enable Low Level Fan Control - tick
Auto - tick

then it shows the temps and duty cycles but I can't change anything. The only other option is a fixed preset.
