What would people recommend out of the above 2 cards.

It will be going in a E2180 system (hopefully overclocked) probably with a monitor of max res 1440 x900 or 1280 x 1024 (depeding on whether I plumb for widescreen or not).

I watn to be able to play the latest games (crysis etc) but obvioulsy not at max settings and am more interested in strategy like medieval II total war.

Thanks for any advice, and if you think a different card (which is actually available ;)) would be more suitable please say!

Recommend you pick up a second hand 8800gts 320mb £100-£120.Out of the above i would get the former though.

3850 is easily better, end of. Don't get 8800gts as 3850 is better.

I just upgraded from a X1900XT (roughly 5% down on a X1950XT) to a HD3850 and the performance difference is in crysis at least very large indeed.

The 3850 is alsoo quieter, draws less power and one important thing for me is that it has the video features I am after (the card will eventually go into a HTPC).

EDIT: for reference crysis at medium settings (water on high) hovers between 40 and 50fps @ 1680x1050 no AA.

I have tried shaders on high (30-35fps) but to me it looks worse than shaders on medium?! (might be something to do with the lighting).

It also overclocks like a female dog on heat as well. A quick run using the CCC overdrive feature has had my Sapphire 3850 up to 769/2198 from 669/1658. I am unsure if this is the max clocks as the CCC sliders only go up to 770/2200.
I have ran through the crysis demo @ 750/2100 although my computer bombed out due to being next to a radiator that I didn't realise was on (DOH!) thusly my front fan was sucking in hot air straight onto the card.

Where can you find these prices? Everyone's favourite auction site doesnt have those prices afaik.

Radeon HD 3850 pro is not better than a gts at higher res and AA AF enabled though. It's a great card if you don't run AA am getting one myself now.

Neither card is good at higher resolutions with AA and AF.

The 3850 going from personal experience is fine at 1680x1050 with 4xAA 8xAF in COD4 although I can't comment on higher as thats the max of my monitor.

TBH at higher resolutions with AA and AF both cards will struggle so it will be the difference between and unplayable framerate and an even worse unplayable framerate.
