Tried to raise this query through a different thread - and shouldn't have hijacked that thread, sorry.

Recently bought a 4850 and last night tried to pair it up with one of my 3870's in Crossfire. Wouldn't have any of it!

Is this because of different drivers?

I should point out that prior to doing this (last night) I had an 8800 GTX in my rig so the last driver was Nvidia's latest offering. Not sure if that has any relevance but thought it might as there was no 3870 driver present.

Anyway, can the 3870 be paired with a 4850? (I thought you could mix and match with Crossfire?

Thanks in advance ;)

this tells you everything you need to know:
http://game.amd.com/us-en/content/images/crossfirex/CF_combo_chart_July08.jpg

you just need the same amount of memory for both cards, otherwise memory available will default to the lowest available for both cards
ie 256mb 3870 - 512mb 4850 will run with 256mb on the 4850 too.

Except for the fact that ATI have already said driver updates will enable xfire between 3 series and 4 series at a later date so long as both cards have the same amount of memory. ;)

thanks for your input chaps.

Just to clarify then, the 3870 and 4850 are currently NOT compatible (pending later driver revisions) - hence me not being able to Crossfire them last night? ;)

Yeah they don't currently work. STill trying to find the update which said on a later driver release the 3 series will xfire with the 4 series.

Hell if an on board 2400 pro will xfire with 4850 and 4870 I don't see why a 3 series wouldn't.

Be cracking that, ATi's really showing Nvidia up at dual cards, SLi is complete crap compared to CrossfireX, they really need to get the thing updated, 4870X2 which is coming is supposedly even better as its a big change in CrossfireX, dear oh dear Nvidia, just can't keep up can yer. :D
