Just a quickie,

Got my 3870 as crimbo pressie today. Got black sections in COD4, so looked at the fan. Doesn't appear to be on lol. Using ATI TOOL 0.27 beta 3, but it doesn't seem to adjust or read the fan speed :( Can someone point me in the right direction please, am I using the latest version?

Oh using 7.12 drivers as well.

EDIT: SEE POST 8 for the resolution to the artifacting. Fan problem is just to do with the way ati set the card up so use a third party app like ATI Tool/Rivatuner/Speed fan to sort that out :)

I use speedfan in Xp to control fan speeds, there is a good guide on setting up speedfan on here only problem is wont work with Vista 64 unless you turn off digital signing (F8 thing at startup). At default the 3870 fan only runs at about 29% speed which on my rig gives idle temp. of 47c and about 70-80c loaded. Using speedfan and setting fan speed to 49% drops 10c off those temps which I'm quite comfy with. You don't say what your temps are. If you're using Xp I suggest you try speedfan, I found it easy to set up several profiles depending on how high my temps. go. Does sound as if your card is overheating in COD4. I found the 3870 fan didn't speed up as temps went up until I forced it to do so with speedfan. Haven't used Ati tool so no nothing about it .
Hope this helps. Good luck and happy Xmas.:D

Also using 7.12 drivers.

The 3870 seems picky about when it's actually gonna spin up to *any* speed. Once you have it running (normally by quickly enabling 3d mode), it will work ok (not tried dynamic yet.

Tried it at 100% fan and still getting major corruption though. (Big black lines etc, skewed textures). The last time it did this was with my x1950xt, and that was sorted by adjusting the PCI-E to 101Mhz. This time I have tried 100/101/102/109/110 and it still artifacts (to varying degrees).

7.12 + crysis hotfix (artifacts right from the start) and gets worse as you play).

Did proper driver clean in safe mode etc, so not sure what's up :(

Fab card, games look great, just don't want to play them with it looking like this :(

I thought I read somewhere that you don't use the Crysis hotfix with 7.12 as it improves on it. I may be wrong on that. I got Crysis for crimbo from the missus and I'm going to install it today. What temps are you getting under full load with your card. My 3870 is the His by the way.:)

Are you overclocking anything, cpu, memory, graphics etc would try stock speeds if you are just to rule out O/c probs. I notice from your sig you had 2 graphics cards running. Have you removed all old drivers and ran driver cleaner in safe mode. I'm not convinced that's necessary but some folks swear by it. :D

Idle: 38-41c (66-70%?)
Idle: 55c-ish (without fan on)

Load with fan at 66-70% it's about 55 I think. (Standard cooler)

I don't have 2 cards running apologies if sig confuses things.

Just tried installing CCC + driver for Vista 64-Bit. All goes fine, reboot.. followed by bluescreen of death on trying to load Vista. Nice. Stuck with XP and trying to get this card to work without problems, until I get Vista working again (might try safe mode later).

Ok, just done a complete uninstall.. clean (safe mode), restarted, restarted again, installed JUST drivers, didn't install ati tool at all this time. Have declocked to standard speed of 1.8Ghz on the C2D. Still artifacts :(

Only difference is now the fan doesn't appear to work at all as it's on the standard (pathetic) settings with the driver/bios.

:( Kinda depressing really.

Ah hah.. looks like I got it :)

Asrock 4CoreDual board (4x PCI-E lol).. you gotta disable the PCI-E Downstream Pipeline, otherwise you get artifacts. Just tested, all seems ok now.. gonna have quick overclock and play Crysis before entire family come over for boxing day.

Just a particular product 'feature' ;) Like advertising the feature of 'untied overclocking' with the motherboard or better overclocking, but you can barely get past 300Mhz with the memory on it lol.
