i have been given a chance to buy an X3870XT for £127 inc del and i am unsure whether to grab it or add the extra £30 for an 8800GT i have no brand loyalty here and i wont be overclocking, also i am on a 20" screen so dont need huge resolutions, just good quality.

8800GT would be faster, in some cases much faster... both have very good image quality...

TBH both will give you very good gaming performance with almost all titles out and both will struggle with crysis so unless your into benchmarking as well you probably won't notice much difference... tho the 8800 will do better with higher levels of FSAA/AF than the 3870.

There isn't that much in it really. I have a 3870 and it is a very good card. Do you really need that slight extra push unless you're into benchmarking? I don't think so. £127 is a very good price, is it 512mb? (not sure if all are 512mb)

8800GT overall is about 15% faster than the 3870, however in most main stream games like oblivion prey, etc. its about 33% faster on average and in the battlefield series for some reason the 8800GT is twice as fast... in 3D Marks 06 the 8800GT is about 20% faster. In doom3 engine games like quake 4, etqw, etc. they are fairly close.

However in the current games lineup if you get playable fps with the 8800GT you will also get playable fps with the 3870.

I think we all agree the gt is the faster card but I'm seeing a lot of problems with failing cards on forums due to overheating which has now been addressed with the new coolers. I'm delighted with my 3870 though I have used rivatuner to up the fanspeed to 50% which I find is a good compromise for temps and noise. For that price that 3870 is very good value.:)

8800GT without a doubt, its better than a 3870.

This is a given, It depends however whether its worth an extra £30.

For £127 that HD3870 is an excellent price.

In most games the 3870 should offer playable framerates whereas the 8800GT will simply offer higher framerates.

The GT is worth the extra money over the 3870 ;), I've had a 2900XT so IMO the 8800GT is worth the extra.
