I have a 3870x2, when i try and use the CCC app to OC it my computer just dies? is this normal or is there some sort of error? It handles all games currently fine but would nice should it need it to be able to tune it up a smidge?

cheers for any help in advance!!!

yeah using auto tune, is it not very reliable? 3d candy, is it just not a very good graphics card or something to do with conflicts, cooling etc?

ATI's auto tune feature never once worked on my pair of 38XX cards, you are far better off using 3rd party tools for your overclock. Auto tune just used to crash out my machine.

it does crash quite often autotune, but also I remember the 3870 x2's being fairly hot so maybe some better cooling would help. I have a 3870 in the son's machine and it's quite toasty...I would see if you can get a mild overclock using a 3rd party utility, or just bump the clocks up manually in CCC 5mhz a time.

I had 3870x2, auto tune never worked well for me, but will msi afterburner i was able to OC slighty

Iv got my old 3870 in our sons machine and it wouldn't overclock 10mhz over stock lol, although it is a crappy branded card

cheers for that guys, someone also mentioned that the card itself is only restricted by a quite easily removable chip, ever heard this mentioned before anyone?

Wouldn't trust that, my non ref cards were cool and quiet but pretty poor clockers. Tell whoever it is to provide a personal warrenty for you taking the pliers to the card (to remove a chip?). He/She might change their mind then. :p

Aye I've never had good results with auto tune regardless of what card I've attempted it with. Just bump your core and memory clocks up by 5 mhz at a time, give them a stability test and repeat, if your system flats out then you know you need to ease off.

I doubt any voltage tweaking will be needed, just manually run it through CCC or another 3rd party.

I agree withthe dislike towards auto-tune. Its not worked well with any card for me as it doesnt know when to stop and just keeps on clocking till the card dies. The same happens withthe ati-tool auto tune as well. The hairy cube starts to get yellow dots then eventually the whole thing tunrs yellow, yet it detects 0 errors and the card eventually crashes.

Nothing beats manual tunning and testing in my opinion as you can stop it before things go really bad and know your limits.
