In short, yes.
However getting it to work has, for some people, been rather difficult.
I haven't personally experienced problems when I used it with a 2900 pro however!

I have used audio over HDMI with both my old 2900XT and my current 3870X2 (plus a friend's system that has a 2900XT) all on my TV, unfortunately, I don't have anything that takes a 5.1 feed over HDMI so I can't help you there. I think it can be hit and miss for it to even work for some people, the friend of mine can't get it to work with his TV but works fine with mine.
