I got an email from Halifax today saying that I had overdrawn by wait for it £1.40 yes thats right a full £1.40 from eBay fees which I wasnt aware were due but thats beside the point. They want £39 pound from me. They sent me this message in my online account:

Dear Mr +44

We haven't been able to pay the item(s) shown below because there wasn't enough money in your account.

To cover our costs, we make a charge of £39 (maximum 3 charges per day) for any item we can't pay. We will take this money from your account seven days from the date of this letter. If this causes you to have an unauthorised overdraft, we will also charge you interest at the unauthorised rate and a monthly unauthorised overdraft fee of £28*. However, if your unauthorised overdraft is £30 or less the unauthorised overdraft charge will not be applied.

We appreciate that nobody likes paying charges and we'd like to help you avoid them in future. We've provided an online banking service that allows you to view an up to date statement of your account, details of your standing orders and direct debits and much more. For full details of the service log on to www.halifax-online.co.uk.

Should you wish to discuss your borrowing needs, you can make an appointment by visiting any branch.

Where we haven't paid a cheque or standing order, please don't forget to make other arrangements for this payment. If the failed payment is a direct debit, you'll need to contact the collecting organisation to see when they'll try to collect the money again.

I think this is discusting, Ive had this account for 4 years and have never once gone in the red and will be going into my local branch tomorrow to vent my feelings. Its so mad over such a small amount. £39 is a lot of money to me its just unacceptable imho.

Not meaning to sound harsh, but you did forget what you were spending, which turned out to be money that you didn't have... If you don't want to be charged, don't abuse the overdraft!

Be more careful in the future, bet that stings :/

Fee's are shocking, but everyone knows that you get a fine if you over draw... You shouldn't have over-drawn really :)

Could try begging? :)

Abbey tried charging me £35 for being overdrawn by 99p. i went into the branch and had a rant and the lady said "hmm that is rather silly i will get it removed"

I know I went in the red im not defending myself there because I should have known that. What I am saying is that there charging a ridiculous amount for doing it.

If it's a minimal amount they will usually cancel the charges if you call them and explain :) try that - worked for me on a £4 over the red.

I think it's called taking responsibility for ones actions. Whilst it may seem harsh I personally don't see a problem with the bank charging you - surely you would have known about unagreed overdraft charges when you took the account out?

Just threaten to leave them and open up another account with a competitor. Banks rip us all off and the more we complain the better it will get. People power works, remeber the fiasco with the ATMs, they got sent back to hide under their slimy stone with their tails between their legs and no mistake.

Check out Moneysaving Expert for better accounts than Halifax with lower charges and better overdraft facilities. :)

I ******* hate that ****** with the glasses and all the rest of the loser employees in their adverts.

Yes, we all have a duty to ensure our accounts are managed responsibly, but that fee is supposed to be "to cover costs". I'd like to know how they incur £39 in costs, for for boils down to a couple of automated computer entries and an automated email.

That charge is, in my view, excessive, for a £1.40 error. I would, politely but very firmly, object and if it wasn't removed or, at least, heavily reduced, I'd move my financial dealings elsewhere.

I ended up with £35 charges for going overdrawn by £2, told them the amount they wanted was riduclous and took and all my savings out of my other account, closed it, and refused to pay the charges.

In the end I got a letter of apology for the charges being so high and if I would be interested in re opening my savings account with them, told em to ****** off and moved to hsbc.

Thanks

I will be politely putting my case forward tomorrow and doing exactly that.

You are aware that you bank is acting unlawfully by charging you a penalty aren't you?

It doesn't cost them £30+ to send you a letter and electronically 'not' pay an outgoing. If they won't give back your money when you ask nicely, take it back via the small claims court. It's your money, they don't have the legal right to charge you that amount, despite what any contract might say.

Just try ringing them. I've rang up HSBC before to sort out any problems like this and they've always sorted it out. Like you I've never crossed 'the line' too much, once I think by about 5p!

For a small overdraft like that, there's a good chance you will be able to get the fees back once. Do it again though and you'll most likely be out of luck.

Contact them, explain (politely), (hopefully) get it back, don't do it again. :)

It's just an automated e-mail sent out. If your only overdrawn by a stupid amount and not for a stupid amount of time then most banks don't have a problem refunding it.

I work in a bank myself and it is just automated. We have no problem refunding fees if the cause is only an honest tiny mistake.

Lloyds Bank charged me £10 per day for being 2p overdrawn a few years ago!!! The worst thing was they sent a letter to let me know which I got 5 days later!
After its sorted go find yourself another bank, you probably funded that ****** with the glasses next tv advert!
