so im thinking about getting one of these cards, is there much difference between the two?

I've switched from a 290 to a 290X and can't really say I notice the difference, other than the satisfaction of not having to wonder "How much better would a 290X be and would I notice it?
If you need every last bit of performance then get the 390X otherwise go for the 390P.
As has been said above the difference is around 10%.
I have the one from Asus, R9 390X DC3 OC Strix. I'm happy with my purchase. Make sure you have enough space in your case. The card is ~30cm long.
And try to find another place to buy it. I don't know why but OC raised the price too much. I got it for £320 and now it's £360. WTF?! Are they preparing for Black Friday?
The price difference between 390 and 390X was ok, now it's almost £100. Greed is strong around here.
As for the performance, I play in 1080p and I get very good results with all settings set to high. In some games the fans are dead silent and the temps are around 60-70 degrees.
