Was planning to skip a couple of gens and settle on the next series of AM5, but I think am bottlenecking on gaming with this chip with a mid to high GPU. My workload has changed so it’s mostly gaming now; so thread counts are less important. Worth swapping out and flipping the old CPU out for a decent rebate?

I made the swap and quite happy with it. Although my gpu is most certainly the bottleneck. It’s the best gaming cpu for the am4 platform so I figured it makes sense to swap to it and get plenty of life out my current system with a new gpu at some point.

Not the 3900xt but went from the 3800x to the 5800x3d and seen massive improvement in both high fps and 1% lows, i game at 1440p with a 3060ti and honestly, its night and day compared to the 3800x

Worth it, but the 5800X3D runs a lot hotter than the 3900X, the only downside really.

Typically won't be maxed in games so not a big deal for now.

I'm mostly gaming at 1440p - 2160p, but some of the more recent titles (especially when I drive resolution down for IQ) really were pushing the load from the GPU to CPU. Cyberpunk was noticeable when doing the path tracing (+mod) on my 7900XT and suspect Starfield will do the same. Was planning to hold out for next gen of AM5, but this is a relatively cheap upgrade and seeing my GPU at < 80% load makes me sad.

Yes, I should think it will be holding back the card in your sig.
I've got the same/similar CPU, and I would imagine that anything beyond a 4070 (non-Ti) or 6800/6900XT will leave some performance on the table when playing at 1440p.
I would have thought you'd be fine for 4K, though.

tbf, its mostly a cyberpunk issue currently as i'm running that probably closer to 1080p internally with path tracing on (via the mod) and seen the 3900xt at 50% with it.
