Pertinent specs:

- Asus Rampage IV Extreme motherboard
- Intel i7-3930k CPU
- 16GB Corsair Dominator GT DDR3 memory
- Noctua NH-D14 cooler

After running this setup at X.M.P settings (3.8Ghz) and nothing else for a while I felt like trying to push it a bit further.

I followed a guide posted on another forum that suggested changing the Turbo Ratio (I think that's right) from Auto to "By All Cores", and entering the required multiplier below.

I entered 42 here, which worked, except when I booted into Windows I saw that when it was speedstepping up to 4.2Ghz the Vcore would also go up to over 1.4v. Setting it to 46 also booted into Windows fine, except the vcore went even higher - up to 1.45v. Far too high for what I would be comfortable with for 24/7 use, especially as I've heard of people getting 4Ghz+ overclocks at 1.32v in some cases.

I checked another guide that advised using "Offset Mode" on the vcore. So, I set what I thought was a modest negative voltage modifier: -0.040v which meant the vcore would ramp up to around 1.38v at 4.6Ghz.

I ran IBT once at this speed (never used it before, so default settings) and it completed without error. Unfortunately it didn't seem stable because as soon as I tried opening Far Cry 3, and on another reboot tried to open Nvidia Inspector, the PC would instantly shut off like the power had been pulled. I should note that running IBT made one of the cores hit 83C.

I read somewhere else in the guide that you have to be careful with offset voltage that you don't drop your idle/underclocked voltages below that which can sustain the lower clocks - if that makes sense. It sounds intuitively to me like this is the problem I'm having since loading Nvidia Inspector shouldn't have taxed the CPU. Then again it is possible that 4.6Ghz is actually far too high for the CPU I've got, I just don't know.

Would appreciate some input from anyone who can give me suggestions for things to try - there's so many options in the BIOS that I don't know where to start really.

the 3930k's run very very hot. It could be that at 4.6ghz your D14 is struggling to cope. Maybe try knocking down to 4.4 and see if that helps? The RIVE has pretty good presets built in for overclocking btw, any reason you are not trying those?

Do you mean the "CPU Level Up" stuff? From memory that only lets me go up to 4.25Ghz and has some pretty high voltages. I can see "Gamer OC profile" etc but no idea what any of that stuff does. :(

The "by all cores" option is an overclocking mode, I think its scaling the voltage up to what it thinks is right for the speed you set, which as with most OC tools is usually overzealous.

*EDIT*

You have to remember that the 3930K is basically a 2600K with the iGPU replaced by another half a 2600K, it will run very hot when OC'd!
