3930k overclocking woes!

Hey 8-Pack, thanks for the informative x79 guide you posted however I am still stuck on getting my 3930k stable at anything over 4.2ghz!

I've followed nearly every 3930k guide on the net and still can't figure out why I get BSOD's when upping the clocks (even with 1.4v+ on vcore).

My setup:

Gigabyte X79 UD5 on the f13w bios (latest)
32 GB corsair vengance RAM running @ stock 1600mhz (timings and voltages stock too).
Corsair H110 cooler in push/pull.
1000w PSU

My system is ROCK stable at 4.2ghz running 1.25 vcore, however no matter what I do with PLL voltages, vcore e.t.c I always get "Clock Watchdog Timeout" BSOD's when running at 4.4ghz+ (using multipliers, not strap adjustments) in a matter of seconds using prime95.

RAM always stays at 1600mhz.

I've even got a fan blowing on the VRM's to make sure that temps aren't a problem.

Could you please guide me as what I'm doing wrong?

Maybe thats the limit of the chip.

Try VTT and IMC voltage tuning with Gigabyte. From recent testing in Tech I remember VTT and IMC being set too low at so called stock. Set both to 1.1 - 1.15v and try again.

Sorry to muscle in, I have been lurking and I too have a similar issue, granted I am using the UD3 from Gigabyte but I get crashes with anything above 4.2Ghz also.

I thought it may be CPU limits but I bought it from a member who had 4.5Ghz from it.

I shall try the VTT and IMC because I think they are < 1v standard.

I tried VTT & IMC at 1.15v
Turbo Power Limits (Watts) 500
Core Current Limits (Amps) 300
1.425 Vcore

Won't even get through a standard run on IBT, I must be missing something simple, I read a guide suggesting 1.35 for VTT and IMC? will it help or is it likely to cause damage?

Tried that made no difference. Back to 4.2Ghz :mad:

Further update, I defaulted the bios settings and set the memory profile to 1866 instead of XMP (2133) and its booted with everything on Auto and been solid at 4.4Ghz, does this point to anything? do i need more memory voltage, looser timings? or is it fluke hehe

In my experience Gigabyte X79 boards are poor compared to Asus, when X79 was first released they had trouble with their VRM's going pop until they added countermeasures via BIOS updates (they probably told the BIOS to cut power to CPU or something to protect VRM's).

This is going back a couple of years but I originally bought a P9X79 with a 3930K, it did 4.5-4.6ghz easily but iirc the onboard audio ports were faulty so I RMA'd it and asked for a Gigabyte (UD5 I think) as a replacement, I couldn't get anywhere near 4.5-4.6 with the Gigabyte I got the same errors you are seeing, I knew it wasn't the chip so I then asked for a P9X79 Pro instead and that also did 4.5-4.6ghz happily. As did the Rampage IV Formula I bought later.

Thanks for the info.

I purchased this chip from a seller who used it with a UD7 so it adds a little food for thought. I also got 4.66Ghz from my 3820 on the same board.
 
The UD7 might be different I don't know, the hex core chips are a lot more demanding when it comes to the motherboard VRM's though, especially if you're overclocking.

When I had the Gigabyte/3930K I couldn't even run a Cinebench test at 4.5ghz that's how bad it was (for me), the Asus's were all Prime stable at 4.6ghz.
 
ASUS are stronger on X79 of this there is no doubt. Not only with CPU clocking, but especially when CPU clocking and Memory clocking.

1.35V IMC/VTT does seem real high for 24/7 although I doubt it will do damage these kind of volts are LN2 high.

Those having problems try DDR1600 and OC CPU only and see where this takes you. Also drop to two channels and try OC CPU. Quad channel is not needed most of the time anyway.

Unfortunately the VTT / IMC voltage bumps didn't help that much - I did manage to at least run a few prime95 runs at 4.5ghz (however only at 1.4v+ vcore. Lower voltage / higher frequency resulted in a CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT bsod.

I'm also running my ram at 1600mhz at stock timings (however I need all 32gb as I use this machine for 3D rendering).

I figure something odd must be going on here if I can run 4.2ghz at 1.225 vcore, but can't run 4.5ghz stable at 1.4vcore? Should I mess with the PLL over-voltage settings?
