3D/120Hz Monitors?

Hi All,

I'm looking to get a new monitor asap, and since I have a GTX 470, i'm considering the possibility of introducing 3D gaming/video/etc to my life.

I have a few questions i'm looking to address before taking the plunge

Does the 120Hz provide a noticeable difference when used in non-3d applications?

I heard that a number of monitors have had problems with 'buzzing' noises, and also light bleed problems.. has anybody encountered this?

What is the best sub-£300 120hz/3D monitor available right now?

Thanks for any help you can provide :D

The options really seem to be between these:

Benq XL2410T 24" @ £320

LG W2363D 23" @ £280

Asus VG236HE 23" @ £280

Acer GD245HQ 23.6" @ £290

Any thoughts on which is the best to go with? The BenQ is slightly out of budget, but I can't really differentiate between the others...

The BenQ XL2410T hasn't reached full retail availability yet so the price has been inflated somewhat by this. Expect the price to reach £260 or so shortly. I will be reviewing this monitor towards the end of the month and have used the Acer and some other 3D monitors for comparison. Unfortunately it will be tested on an ATI system as it stands. I may try to get ahold of an Nvidia solution so I can test the 3D performance but it seems unlikely in the timeframe I have.

Cool, thanks for the feedback. PCM2, I went on the link in your sig.. on your site you mentioned that the quality in 2d usage is lower than in comparable monitors.. is that still the case?

probably about 80% of my use of this monitor will come out of Adobe programs as I'm a designer, rather than games/movies, so I don't want to sacrifice 2d image quality too much.

Which article were you referring to? I think that was a reference to comparable monitors at the price point - seeing as you can get superior panel types such as E-IPS for the price. :)

Sorry, I should've stated which one. Article was here,

their 2D performance has left something to be desired. Although they are by no means poor, the contrast ratio and colour richness is simply not up to the standard of other similarly priced ”non-3D” monitors.

Thanks. That is what I thought you were referring to. The panels themselves are the same 'type' as is used in £100-£200 monitors. They suffer from relatively poor colour reproduction, in particular, compared to 'IPS' monitors of a similar price. If you take a £260 '3D' monitor you are looking in the same price bracket as the Dell UltraSharp U2311H. As a general purpose monitor with design work being a large focus the U2311H is a much more suitable choice - it still handles games very nicely and offers superior 2D image quality. We have reviewed the U2211H from an entertainment perspective if you want some food for thought. This is slightly less responsive, the backlight isn't quite as powerful as the U2311H and the screen is an inch and a half smaller. Colour performance, however, is very similar.

TFT Central covers the U2311H from a 'professional use' perspective so this review is also worth a look.

Great, Thanks a lot for the links & advice. I think ultimately, if I get a non-3d monitor, i'll probably spend less and/or spend the same and get a larger monitor (e.g. BenQ M2700HD 27"), rather than spend the same amount on a 2D of better quality.

I'm very tempted to wait a week or two to get the BenQ one once its stabilised with price. However, new PC is coming from OCUK tomorrow so i'm going to be monitorless for a week or two... unless I borrow an old CRT from work :p

Nothing wrong with borrowing a CRT if it buys you some thinking and price-lowering waiting time. ;)

Come to think of it, I work at a surveillance company and we have a couple HannsG 32" LCD screens going spare at the moment... might have to borrow one for a couple of weeks... those have been awful screens though... had them a year and 2 are already knackered!
