3D and ATI?

Hello,

I'm going to get a Projector (already got the screen, just need to pick the Projector) tempted to get a '3D ready' one (120Hz), I've currently got a 1GB 4870 and am thinking of an upgrade 5850 or 460, I read ages ago that ATI was going to support 3D, has this happened yet?

What are people’s thoughts on ATI and 3D?

Cheers

I don't think it's going to happen for a while, the DDD one anyway, although I think IZ3D does some drivers for 120hz 3D, not completely sure though

ATi 3D stuff is done by a third party, however there are supposed to be glasses coming out endorsed by ATi to work with their hardware, I can't say when they're out though because I don't have a clue.

If you actually want working 3D thats polished, supported and working with 100s of games, applications and movies - all with documentation and profiles then you will have to buy an nVidia card and 3D Vision kit.

That's typical ATI really relying on 3rd parties for extras, people complain about NVidia prices but they do get stuck in and do things for themselves.

They're doing it like that so as to not lock people down to a specific manufacturer. A big downside to nVidia's 3D is that you need an nVidia card to use it. That can be very offputting to a lot of people who can't justify nVidia's much higher prices.

Additionally, as Raven said, it's just a gimmick at the moment. It's what nVidia specialise in at the moment, gimmicks labeled as unique selling points.

I think 3D is great, but the initial start up cost is very offputting. Firstly, I've already got 3 Dell 2408s and a 5870, to get some of nVidia's 3D Vision action, I'd have to dump all of that and buy new monitors, glasses and an nVidia graphics card.

It's a bit like PhysX (well hardware physics), while it belongs to nVidia primarily, it's not going to take off too well. When it's supported by all manufacturers is when it'll be well implemented and used because the devs aren't isolating a specific group of customers in favour of another.

He probably means for decent framerates because of how 3D vision cuts your frame rate in half.

it doesn't cut it in half

from what I've read Crysis 2 will have 95% (effectively 190%)the fps in 3D that it gets in 2D

honestly I think 3D is going to stick in the gaming industry because of Crytek if this is true. Plus some people think PhysX is going to fail, I disagree, look at Mafia II

I don't see Pippa Funnell anywhere on that list!

As for ATI 3d solution there’s no confirmed dates but Sapphire had 3D setup running at Compex a little while ago so it should be just around the corner.

You won’t find ‘ix3d’ branded glasses anywhere, they have already said they will sell them to third parties and they will use there own brand names so expected to Sapphire branded ix3d powered glasses in the next couple of months.

It really does. If you're getting 40FPS without 3D on, then with 3D on you'll be getting 20FPS.

As for Crysis getting "effectively 190% of the FPS in 3D", that doesn't even make sense, how can the performance go right up when you're turning a feature on that decreases performance?

He means 190% of the "norm". So 90% ish...
Apparently Crysis 2 is designed with 3D in mind so when enabled it will disable certain things that are enabled in 2D as they are not needed due to the 3D effect, this will boost performance back up to normal levels even when in 3D mode. In time i'd imagine more developers will start doing this, 3D is gaining popularity.
