So Ive just read one of the games I've been looking forward to (black ops), will be in 3d. Now - call me stupid, but I just don't get the whole 3d thing, especially the need for a 3d TV.

So every high street store is touting 3D TV's, saying that it's the best thing since sliced bread, but do we actually need one in order to play 3d games?!

My only frame of reference of a 3D experience is watching Avatar at the cinema. There was no need for a special cinema screen, just the normal screen did the job, along with the goggles.

Why can't I play black ops, in 3d, on my normal HDTV... with some stolen goggles from Odeon on?
How will my console know whether I'm using a 3DTV or not?

The trick you've missed with the cinema is that it's not the screen that the image is projected onto that matters, it's the camera that's used to project the image.

No you can't get 3d on normal TVs. Wikipedia will give you a more in-depth reason as to why, basically 3d tvs are just capable of working in a different way compared to normal tvs.

That doesn't mean you can't play blackops in 2d on a normal tv however...

Wont make any difference to you if you wish to play it in 2D.

I know, but my point was that what if I wanted to play it in 3d, on a HDTV

Ta-da. Ofcourse you need new hardware, the cinema you went to would have had a new projector or at least an addon to existing system, and may of needed a new silver screen aswell.

Riiight, I'm with ya now, cheers guys

I still don't think it's going to be huge until they come up with goggle-free TVs that work with a decent field of view.

+1

or atleast when they become a reasonable price, it was a hassle getting my 2 yr old to sit through Happy Feet 4D cinema at drayton manner but she loved it when it got going.

i was impressed with a 3dtv i got a demo of but was put off when the guy started arguing with me that it was not possible to have 3d without glasses of some sort dispite me mentioning the 3DS and the fact that im sure not long ago the thought of HD3DTV's would have never been possible.

People have no problems trying to look cool with shades on. Besides half the time they dont actually need them. However this idea that wearing glasses is a major problem for the general public seems to be over exaggerated I think.

Looking a dork at home with 3D specs on wont be much of an issue as who else sees you. Still most reports I read of early 3DTV adopters is that they are quite enjoying the technology and the glasses are not a major problem.

True that some manufacturers glasses are better than others. Id say Sonys are best then maybe Samsungs. Also for gaming the Plasma 3DTVs have less screen lag and less prone to 3D ghosting referred to as "crosstalk"

Samsung seem to be making the most from 3DTV with over 500,000 sales since April which is surprising regards the sheer lack of content yet available.

However prices are also falling with Samsungs newest 50" 3DTV plasma available with one pair of glasses online for under £1000. Thats pretty good considering the included spec of other features and compared to what £1000 got you 1-2 years ago.

Many games and games companies will jump on the 3D Bandwagon so results in games are likely to be very mixed. Some will use forms of adding a 3D effect rather than rendering each frame from two perspectives.

Crysis 2 is one that developrs said they suffered very little performance hit, so I question how they are implementing theirs particulary as X360 will have the same and its not possible for X360 to support the proper "HDMI 3D stereoscopic 720p gaming standard". So any games quoting 3D compaitbility that are cross platform in my opinon wont offer the full or best possible experience. Likely 1/2 resolution interlaced 3D as thats the max HDMI 1.2 on X360 or items like Sky HD can offer.

It will be intresting to see how other games match up to Sonys first party 3D titles like KZ3.
For me the benchmark will be GT5 and KZ3 if they suck with the 3D then I guess the hype isnt worthy and it may take PS4 to accompish it properly.

I don't think it's necessarily about looking like a dork. It's the fact that a pair of the glasses is at least fifty notes. Four people in your family? £200. Oops. I just stood on a pair in the dark whilst rushing to answer the phone. £50 down the drain. :D

Many companies are still over charging for glasses and its more like £70 - £100 each not £50

Still Samsung had a website you entered your serial number and you got 2 pair free. Not sure what models this is restricted too but look at it this way if you own a PS3 you have a 3D Blu Ray player with most functionality needed that cost nothing extra at all. PS3 owners which their are millions dont have to go out and buy a new £300+ player.

I have issues with the glasses, as I wear normal corrective glasses :(

I wear corrective glasses and have no problems wearing 3D glasses. Sunday I spent nearly four hours with them on while watching Monsters Vs Aliens and Ice Age 3 and it was great, no headaches, nowt!!

3D gaming will be enhancing and I cannot wait.

im yet to try it and am also worried about headaches etc, as we all know, gaming generally consists of sitting there for hours on end :)

I'll be waiting until the tech has been FULLY developed, and prices are so cheap it is included as standard in most tv's.
I'm not gonna waste my cash testing new technology tbh.

edited for Mr Latte ;)
