Hi All i happened to be looking for a new laptop on a Auction site ( that one ) and happened to stubble across the new 3D models ,i was wondering is this any good & worth buying ,as i don,t think there are many Blu Rays & dvd out on 3D yet ,plus not sure i can sit with glasses on ha! any views please  ?

I have an XPS 17 L702x with 3D and recently I tested out the 3D with games like Half-Life 2, Flat Out 2, and Black Ops Zombies. I'm not really that into it to be honest it's kind of a gimmick to me. it works reasonably well for the most part and I can see it becoming more popular in the future as more games support it natively.

I also watched Avatar 3D and the glasses are comfortable to wear for long periods.

I didn't buy the laptop for the 3D feature to be honest but it was a massive bargain so I figured I'd go for it to get the 120Hz screen and the L702x configuration I bought also has four dimm slots so I run it with 16GB DDR3 whereas the non-3D configurations have a different motherboard which only has two dimm slots.

Also if you are looking for good battery life, the non-3D XPS 17 L702x laptops have Optimus technology where the laptop saves battery power by switching to the onboard GFX for general computing use and supposedly it more than doubles the battery life.

sounds good does the 3D model have this feature with the battery ?

ok is the GT555M a good card ?
It's dated now but still capable.

There will be a much faster mainstream discrete chip based on the 600 series (kepler) in the not too distant future but no idea when that'll happen. It could be early next year or much later, it'll depend on how quickly manufacturers refresh their laptops.

str, can i ask where you picked up your glasses/ i've only been looking on the bay so far? i'm guessing they didn't come with the laptop :D

I got a pair of the official Nvidia 3D Vision for £35 delivered from the MM but previously to that I bought a clone 3D Vision kit (seller sells it for £44.99) which has it's own emitter and it didn't work properly because of having the built-in emitter. I returned the clone but it was such a hassle and took over a week to sort out as the seller wasn't very friendly. With the clone emitter I could run the 3D setup and medical test after messing around enabling 3D first then plugging it in but it would only work once and then would give a black screen when I tried to use it again.

That looks like the glasses from the kit I had which didn't work. I forgot to say the clone kit used RF instead of IR which made it incompatible with the L702x's built-in emitter.

Also, I was tempted to go for the 3D Vision 2 glasses but couldn't find them for less than £80 but if I was to use 3D a lot I'd do it as the version 2 is meant to be a lot better even without having a screen that supports the new brightness feature of 3D Vision 2.

I tried Test Drive Unlimited 2 today which has native support for 3D Vision and it's very well implemented and looks good.

I've just realised the clone kit's 3D emitter would work fine by using device manager to disable the built-in Nvidia 3D emitter. :o

str, thanks for the useful posts. Does that mean we don't need a kit/bundle but just the glasses themselves to work with the L702x.

If that is the case, that would save on a few £££. I'll keep an eye out for IR version too.

Yeah you only need a pair of Nvidia 3D Vision glasses for the L702x.

Underneath the Dell logo on the LCD bezel is the Nvidia 3D Vision emitter. I read about compatibility as there are many manufacturers making active shutter glasses but the Nvidia 3D Vision emitter works only with Nvidia's 3D Vision glasses (can be version 1 or 2).

There are Nvidia 3D Vision 1 wireless glasses, Nvidia 3D Vision 1 wired glasses, and Nvidia 3D Vision 1 wireless glasses and emitter kit. Recently Nvidia 3D Vision 2 was released and the version 2 glasses are compatible with the original Nvidia 3D Vision emitter.

So you only need glasses ? and the Dell 702 has the emitter built in wow ! clever idea ! i,ve seen just the 3d Glasses Nividia vision 2 for £73.69 ;)

Be careful, that place isn't renowned for it's friendly customer support, and the picture looks wrong, it looks like the wired 3D Vision 1 glasses. The other 3D Vision 2 they have has the correct picture.

EDIT: Actually scratch that, looks like you found somewhere else and the place I was thinking has fixed their description to say it's wired glasses. :)

yeah your right i was wrong ha! they are wired ones and the wireless is £78 what i,m wondering is it worth paying for Nvidia or go for the cheaper ones with there own emitter which will work as you said ? maybe you get what you pay for true ?;)

There are some 3D glasses for around £10 but don't say Nvidia on them. But say IRange. I've emailed the seller asking whether they are compatible with the 702x.

Just found those Irange glasses but no emitter with them ,but the 702x has its own Nvidia built in so should work
