I have just run 3D mark 06 on my pc and it brings up the BFG 8800gts OC as an 640mb version rather than the 320mb which I purchased, has any one else had this, or have I just had a bargain. :)

Is there any easy way to tell the difference between the 2 cards. Other than the box.

Many thanks

Or run doom3 in ultra mode and see if it runs like a dog :D

Are you being serious  ?. Does the 320mb version struggle with Doom?. Runs fine on my system everything on full  .

no it doesnt struggle, but the framerate drops massively. ultra is no different in quality to the next highest mode though, but it does highlight the possible difference we will see when games start needing >320mb of textures.

edit: spelling :o

Yup just done that, still brings it up as a 640mb version..
oh well just looks like a bargin.

Superb. Try other ways to check as you don't want to be let down as we all mess up sometimes. I'm not trying to imply your stupid. Just can't believe your luck :p :D .

I hope it is the 640mb?.

Thanks for the quick reply ;) . Thank god I'll be picking up the 640mb version then. I'm only at 1680x1050 but I'd rather have the extra memory. Not going from 512mb to 320mb.

I agree. Future titles could start hurting the 320mb version. As they're so cheap though they can be sold on and the 640mb version will be around the £200 mark or even lower I'd imagine.

Press the windows key and pause break together and then go to Hardware tab and then onto device manager and see if any information is there hessman.

If you got it from OCUK then get your nike air max on as they'll be coming(gibbo at the wheel) :D .

sorry off topic, J.D what cooling and settings are you using to get your X2 3800+ to 2.8GHz? Is it AM2 or S939?

Slightly back on topic.....I just ordered my EVGA 8800GTS 320 Mb :D Once its installed I will run 3D Mark and see if mine does the same :)

Thanks for speedy reply. I've just looked on Riva tuner and that displays as a 640mb version as well. Oh well happy gaming for a bit longer then. ;)

And for info I purchased it from a well known high street retailer for 199.99

939 Manchester.

Don't laugh.

It's on a lowly AC Freezer Pro. I also have a fast fan doubled on top of the AC Freezer pro to increase airflow. Since changing to this DFI board it's been worse for temps as my MSI Neo4 board aimed the Freezer Pro in the line of the two 120mm fans at the front and rear of my case, Now the back of my x1900 is right underneath the back of the Freezer heatsink and it's absorbing heat of the card which isn't great. Also my side is off. I have a Kandalf case and it's got good airflow but the way this motherboard is set out my PC benefits the cabriolet look:D.

I went through a few settings after seeing your post and I've not changed my sig accordingly. They are my ram settings when I was at 2.72Ghz and I've not decreased them when upping my CPU in sig :o .

Right my settings as of now are: 2.8Ghz // 280FSB X10 Multi // 1.475 vcore in Bios. DDR 466 @ 2.5-3-3-7 on a 166divider.

Also use 297 X 9.5 Multi // 2.82Ghz // 1.475vcore. DDR 470 @ 2.5-3-3-7 on a 166 Div.

All ram voltage is stock.

If I'm gaming for hours and the heating is on then I go down to 273/274 X10 Multi (2.73/2.74Ghz) // 1.4vcore. DDR 496/498 @ 2.5-3-3-7 on a 180 Div. I can't get my ram stable at DDR500 for some reason. Loosened timings, reduced latency and gave it some volts but Computer said No.

Since getting my 22" screen I don't mind about dropping the speeds if I know I'll be gaming for an hour or two as my graphics card is doing most of the work. I only drop it if I'm concerned about temps. Freezer pro is ok to start with but isn't good for overclocking, hence the second fan on top for me. I'm not going water till I decide with AMD's new line up and Intel so can anyone recommend an air cooler that will do the damage for me compared to this Freezer pro?.

OMFG I've just written a report. I'm away on one today. What a geek hahahaha. Sorry about that. Well at least your getting a detailed explanation lol.

I hope you enjoy your new card Panthro. Do not be disappointed if it's the 320mb version as it's a stonker of a card. Ask LoadsaMoney, he'll tell you till his face turns blue hehe.

Get that sig changed hehe. Your selling yourself short.

Congratulations on the cheapest brand spanking new 640mb 8800GTS in the land ;).

The best screw up I've heard of this year. Now get into some excellent looking and performing games. ;)

Well, on high res, ultra quality it will drop from about 150fps in the 640mb to 75fps in the 320MB. Just leave it on high quality mode. Very little difference in texture quality and the same performance.

Most games, no difference. Take Oblivion, no real difference:-

Thanks mate, great post :) Ive got an X2 3800+ 939 manchester too and Im trying to get a higher clock that 2.4GHz. I think I need to play about with the RAM settings first and install my 8800GTS.

Ahh I see. Not too bad then. I'm still going for the 640mb myself though. A few extra quid is worth it to me although I would love Hessmans deal. ;)

Your welcome and thankyou.

Drop your RAM down low and concentrate on your CPU till you find the max then vice versa for the RAM. What voltage are you using at 2.4Ghz?.

Don't spend too much time on the overclocking part just yet though. 2.4Ghz and your 8800GTS are just dying to be used. Have fun first and if you feel as if you need a CPU boost then go for it.

What drivers are you useing?

It sounds entirely possible to me that if you're useing a set that was around prior to the 320MB version's release, older drivers could be mistakeing the card for the 640MB version.

Try visiting Nvidia's homepage to obtain the latest 100.65 drivers and see if it still reports your card as the 640MB version. The only other way to ell is to remove the heatsink and look at the memory chips.

I started with the stanard BFG drivers and then changed to 97.92, with no change. I thought that 100.65 drivers were for vista users. Still running XP.
