Want to try my hand at 3D modeling...

Im going to try and start with Blender again. I used it 4-5 years ago but didnt have a lot of time to use it properly.

Anyone here use it a lot? Any expert tips you can give me? Got tons of tutorials im going to be working through.

Also anyone here use POV-Ray or other programs that support POV-Ray files?

How easy is POV-Ray to use? Seems to be a lot of programs that you can use the tweak stuff you make in it...

I use Blender a fair bit, I'm far from an expert modeller but I certainly know the interface well.

In terms of results, PovRay and Blender are perhaps on a par, but Blender has the advantages of having the modeller, Physics, Gaming Language, Particles, Storyboard, etc, where as PovRay is simply script-based.

You can get modellers for PovRay but they just feel clunky.

But Blender has come on leaps and bounds the past 2-3 years, some of the results the really good modellers are churning out are absolutely incredible and the physics engine is going from strength to strength with each release.

I've not had a chance to try out Blender properly, I've seen some very good stuff with it though.
Take a look at Big Buck Bunny

Personally I'm a 3dsmax user, and have been using it for a few years, so feel free to quiz me on general 3d workflow (already got you on msn I think :))

I started off in 3D with POVRay, moving through various packages and ending up in Lightwave for the ease of modelling where I have stuck to this day.

I've never really liked Blender's modelling interface and tools but it is obviously capable of producing professional results. Just a heads up - Caligari TrueSpace is now free for download - http://www.caligari.com/Products/trueSpace/tS75/Brochure/Intro.asp - hardly industry standard but it's a nice package IMO.
