3D or not 3D?

Hello! Just installed my second gtx 470 today and my PC is eating up games like a monster :D

The next step in my never-ending upgrade quest is to either go 3D, or use 3 monitors for 2D surround.

I'm doubtful whether even my 2 470s would always give 120fps to meet every Hz of the refresh rate, so what happens when the FPS goes lower than 120 when using 3D? I'm the kind of geek that requires smooth gameplay with everything on maximum, but I'm a bit concerned at any cut to quality while trying to meet the 120 fps needed for a 3D monitor.

Any advice guys?

My advice would be to wait until OLED is fuly developed. Monitors will be cheaper, lighter, and better than ever. Could save yourself a lot of money ust by waiting

hmmm 3D is nice but too much cross talk at present

120hz oled may solve this but for heavens sake don't wait for Oled 60hz or 120hz its gonna be aaaagggesss before we see anything realistically.

If I did it all again i'd get a nice IPS screen like the dell ultrasharps.

get your 470's working for you by going to max resolution on a 27+'' TFT I say:)

having said that panning in sc2 online at 120hz is really nice

back into online FPS now (unreal 2 XMP) and 120hz is really nice at twitch sniping:D

Hiya guys, thanks for the advice :)

I think I will shelve the 3D plans for the moment. After a day of info-gathering, I think your right 3t3P, I'm probably better waiting for 3D tech to get a bit better.

A 27" screen sounds pretty awesome tbh :D I play a lot of FPS multiplayer from L4D2 to BFBC2 so having that extra screen real estate will be a wicked boost to my gaming.

I love the idea of 3D, but atm it seems like there are a lot of limitations to it. Cheers guys.

3D is great fun. Really transforms a lot of games I've played, especially older stuff like Flatout 2 and Half Life 2.

It's really one of those things you have to try yourself. I just went for one because I could, and I love it. A good friend of mine feels the same way.

120Hz is nice even without the 3D effect though. Just comes down to whether you can afford it/are willing to pay for it.

I had the same dilemma, in the end I went for a pretty good but cheap, almonst disposable 60hz. So even if i change again in a years time, I will not have wasted a lot of money. Im going to wait as there are things coming out all the time.

I have been messing about with 3D for the past year and have come to some conclusions....
It's definitely something worth considering. I would not go back to gaming without 3D now. I love it!
Unfortunately there are not many great 3D monitors around at the moment and I have tried almost every one except the Alienware and Planar.
So for my 3D gaming fix, I will be investing in a 3D dlp projector, can't wait and really excited, shoud be awesome!
Who needs a 22-27inch 3D screen when you can have an 80-120 inch screen

Aw guys if only I had the room for a projector :D

I just don't want to get a 3D set-up and then be annoyed because there is tons of ghosting and the image quality suffers.

How much ghosting do you 3D people get when your playing? Also, I heard that 3D screens are really dark in-game.

3d TV's have come down in price in the last year. I dont really see the point in buying a 2d TV now at all

120hz refresh is LLLLLLLLLLLLLURVLY in fps games like CSS.

It essentially removes screen tearing without having to enable vsync which is an absolute god send becuase vsync adds quite a bit of mouse lag and thats super bad for quake/css games.

I've been on 120hz for atleast 2 months now and I tried a game out by switching to 60hz and it made me feel sick. The absolute smoothness of 120hz is incredible :)

Once you go 120hz you won't go back ;)

Just get 3D monitor, whether you will play games in 3D or not. The step up from normal 60hz is mind blowing. The smoothness is unbelievable!!!
Plus, you can get a new 3d monitor when you can afford, then play 3D surround
