3D studio and maya PC

yeah i had disregarded the uni idea already. nice tablet there. though i think A4 is a bit big :) 2 Gig of ram i have definately settled on. what programs do people use here? and which ones are good with tablets?

thankyou :)
all adobe here. my dads mate works there so just for that reason.

illustrator, photoshop, image ready (for simple gif animation).

i also did a bit of movie making with friends a while ago for that i used
premier, and afterimage.
once you get used to one adobe the rest follows the same logic imo.

and is that what you meant by programs?

yeah that was what i meant. i dont even know what is good for use with tablet really. the more info i can get the better. does a program like maya benefit from a tablet. i see how adobe would. but maya less.

dont include software with this spec.

maya is being provided by uni as it part of her course.
What course is she doing out of interest :)

I'll be using Maya and 3DSmax next year too :D

same course as me electronic engineering. however her interests have changed a bit and she has put all her open units into modules for maya etc. character creation and various things. dont know the exact detail. she is a talented artist for sketchign painting etc and wants to transfer her skills into the computer world. tried to run maya on her laptop and it was far too slow and usuing a touch pad was impossible. and the screen isnt that good etc.

well it will be easier with a pen although most parts may require the accuracy of a mouse. and the other thing is pens dont have scroll which i use as zoom.

I mostly use Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and 3D studio max. I havent used it for a litlle while though. Ive played with most of the major 3D packages, as I did a Computer Animation degree.

Ive tried using my Pen in 3D studio max, and I find it impossible. Give me my Mx1000 anyday. ;)

i use studio max 7 and adobe photoshop for modelling and my 3200+ SLI 7600GT runs it good

Edit: and yeah studio max loves more GFX memory and more system memory

CPU is the main thing though. Ive got a A64 3000, and it can be brought to its knees when rendering. My mate had a P4 with HT, which helped a lot, and dual core will help even more. Every second you can shave off each frame during a render is important, as ive had renders last 3-4 days before which gets very annoying when you can't use your pc for anything else.

Just for reference : Viewport Speed (realtime feedback) will benefit from Graphics card, CPU & RAM, Rendering only from CPU speed, really (or RAM if you're running out).
Definately not worth getting a Quaddro or Fire GL unless you plan to earn your living from the machine. For a gaming card, definately go for an NVidia, especially for Maya, the drivers are much better for 3D apps.
2 Gig ram will be handy. If she plans to do much animation, particularly character animation then it's worth getting at least a mid-range graphics card for closer to realtime playback speed.
I agree entirely re monitor, get the biggest decent quality you can afford. If you have the cash & space, a 2nd monitor will help a lot. You can put all your palettes / toolbars / dialogues / keyframes on there. A cheapo tft or old CRT will do fine for the 2nd monitor.
Finally, dual core is highly desirable here, better a cheapo dual core than a top-end single core for 3d work.
