3D Supported on Z68?

Ok, Been looking at Z68 but one thing I'm not sure about, which will be a deciding factor is 3D?

Basically I will have to use the DVI-D connection on the mobo? On the ASRock Extreme4 I read that it only supports 1080p @ 60hz. So 120hz 3D won't be possible.

Is this the case with all the Z68s? (Asus and MSI)

Isn't the output dictated by the onboard GPU on the new sandybridge CPUs? Thereofre no matter which motherboard you buy the Intel HD3000 will only support the 1080p @ 60hz?

I may be way off the mark though as I don't actually own a SB system.

I'm talking about the Z68 where it allows you to use both onboard and discrete and switch between them, so the connection has to be plugged into the motherboard.

I think what he is saying is the onboard GPU chip on the CPU itself could be limited to 60Hz, which would mean the limitation has nothing to do with the Z68 chipset itself. Not sure if he is right mind but it is worth looking into.

Yeah I wasn't very clear in my first reply.

Just had a trawl through MSI and Asus and as far as I can see the GD80/GD55 and P8Z68-V PRO only have HDMI/DVI-D (single link?) and the Asus has VGA.

It shows HDMI/DVI supporting 1920X1200 @ 60Hz, the Gigabyte don't seem to even support the Intel HD graphics.

So as far as I can see most motherboards (all of them I have seen) only have single link DVI so no 120hz :(

Saying that the Q67 chipset seems to support displayport but is still limited to 60hz.

It looks like you may have to just go with P67.

Seems like the only option would be a dedicated graphics card, using the onboard for basic stuff and then the card for what ever 3D stuff you wanted.

Single Link is to mentioned as it won't support high resolutions which require dual link DVI (like 2560x1600) so that shouldn't hold you back @ 1080p. However they obviously need to support 120Hz.

Hmmm, ok so swapping to Z68 is out of the question. I still have a B2 revision P67. I will have to get it replaced this week. I was planning on buying a Z68 fitting that, then selling my B2 replacement.

Intel's onboard graphics just don't support 3D. Simple as.

If you want 3D you need a 120Hz monitor, Nvidia 3D Vision kit and a meaty Nvidia graphics card.

Not so sure about that statement, this http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3853#ov and more specifically this section

"Intel® InTru™ 3D
Users can enjoy the ultimate 3D visual experiences–seamlessly–from their PC. Now you they can watch their favorite 3D movies with Blu-ray Stereo 3D playback using active shutter 3D glasses. It delivers it all in 1080p full, high-definition resolution on the TV over HDMI 1.4."

seems to contradict what you are saying.
The gigabyte motherboard from the link page has a vga, dvi-d, hdmi and displayport.
Most likely the 3d on offer may be only 1080p @ 60hz (only guessing though)

Thank you op for bringing up the 3d feature on the z68, never knew about it till now, :D

The HDMI specification on Z68 Motherboards with the HDMI out is 1.4a - which does signify some kind of 3D support. As said before, it looks like it's more for movie playback than anything.
