3d tv- first impressions

never really seen the appeal of 3d to be honest, thinking back to the rubbish passive glasses of the 80's i've never been inclined to look at it seriously.


but the wife went to see the smurfs in 3d at the cinema with the daughter a few weeks ago and came home raving.

being a man i gave in and said we could get a 3d tv.


after a bit of hassle with an order for a 6900 which kept getting delayed we cancelled that and went shopping today
and we came home with a LGpz570t.

now first impressions went quite well picture looked great in 2d and after a bit of faffing about playing with the smart tv options and playing with the built in plex i was well pleased.

that was until i loaded up the 3d demo app and pulled on the glasses.

i was literally blown away. finding a shoal of fish appearing halfway between your couch and the tv is mindblowing then watching a 3d advert for the lionking was amazing with things swooping out at me. i never thought it would be this good. So i cracked on and watched a copy of yogi bear with the kids and have to admit i'm seriously impressed and feel this can be the future of tv. even watching normal tv in 2d/3d conversion mode everything just feels richer, and deeper obviously.


so if your thinking about taking the plunge and think its nothing special please beg borrow or steal a shot of a decent 3d setup and see what your missing :)


next up some gran turismo in 3d :) :)
 
yeh future of tv until everyone goes blind or has massive headaches >.<

in all seriousness 3d is a fad, a big one.
movie producers are seeing less and less returns on 3d movies and many in the industry are backing away from it double time.

The only ones excited for it? well that would be tv manufactures who desperately need the next 'big thing' to re-sell the same tv's they were trying to shift 2 years ago. im glad you have gotten some enjoyment out of it though...im sure it was worth the ridiculously inflated price tag.

3d is great when the glasses go and the mind is being tricked less so there is no long term damage we just don't know how this will effect our sight and in the end 3D should be natural and not pop out so much, its only 'wow /weird' because its a confusing image for the brain, proper 3D like real life wont stand out.

furthermore the best 3d would be a larger screen like a projector and looking into a window of the world. The stuff flying out cant be realistic its only just a bit of fun as its half transparent for a start. Only silly effects films are any good for stuff constantly flying out.

i will try upcoming tech that has no goggles and uses different methods of course but im more excited about 4k cinema in the home with 4x the definition of blueray

as others have said my opinion is 3D is a fad and an expensive one.

I really don't see the point in it. I've watched a couple of things in 3D and just got headaches. Football players look flat and cardboard cutout like and films are just gimiky at best.

Personally i'm more interested in the next gen of high definition. now that will be mind blowing

my youngest lad wanted a Nintendo 3DS for his birthday. so we went out and got him to test some to make sure it was what he wanted. he played one for literally 2mins and said his eyes hurt so switched it back to 2D mode.

So now he is just getting a DSi
 
Its all very good if you have perfect eyesight, I dont, and HATE the way 3D is being pushed at me from every angle, I cant see it atall, All the TVs are heading down the 3D route and If I want to go to the flix I have to sit there with glasses...over my glasses.....and I still cant see 3D, and heaven forbid I take the 3D glasses off I get left with that bloody fuzzy line around everything....end rant.

I agree with the OP. When it's done properly, 3D is great. The whole glasses argument I don't buy. I have an active set (50VT30) and glasses that weigh 25g, you do not even notice them.

So much so in the past week I have bought 20+ 3D blurays, and about to buy more :P.

Ocean Wonderland is an amazing one to show off 3D by the way. It blew me away.
 
I can't justify the expense at the moment - obviously everyone's circumstances will differ.

I've only seen Avatar in 3D - I'm not sure if it added or detracted from the story. How have you felt about that from what you've seen so far?

snap but replace buy with download in half-sbs and streamed over plex :)

My eyesight isn't perfect but I don't yet need to wear glasses.

When watching 3D with glasses, I get really bad eyestrain and headaches. I said from the start 3D in it's current form will never take off.

wait till the non glasses 3d tvs become mainstream

buying a non 3d tv will be like trying to buy a non flatscreen is now.

But seriously having watched quite a few blockbuster 3D movies at the cinema with the missus, i found they gave me a headache but i suppose your eyes just need to get used to the 3D effect.

Saying that i have a Panny 46" Plasma coming next thurs which is 3D enabled...got 2 free 3D glasses and a 3D blu ray player as well for £1200 so will definitely give it a bash but tbh i didnt buy the TV for the 3D...i still feel its a bit of a gimmick although the sets they had in the store that were 3D ready were quite good tbh.
