so for the weekend i treated myself to a new benq xl2420t and nvidia 3d vision 2 kit :) (running GTX 680)

only tested with a few games so far and although over all i am impressed there is a part in my brain whispering "DSR and get the monies!" haha!

firstly does anyone have a any tips or setup info for any of the following games or for 3D or the monitor in general.

the games and my thoughts:

World of Tanks - I thought this works really well with the 3D... you really do get a sense of depth in game and especially detail on the tank! looks stunning! however the 3D does do a bit of a performance hit, and my fps in WoT hasn't been right for ages :\ (on average getting about 60fps non 3d and about 40 in 3d).

Battlefield 3 - when running about as infantry i did find i had to turn the depth down quite allot or things just didnt look right. but in anything with an overlay... tanks, jets, heli, static AA....it looked friggin' awesome! the overlay really looked like it was coming off the screen and the ingame bezels (e.g. on the static AA) really did appear to arch out. but as i said, as inf sometimes it was a bit hard to focus on shooting, especially if you move your head (real head) the images moves a bit. but still generally sexy looking. but again.... does have a bit of a performance hit especially on highly populated fly maps.

Diablo 3 - this works really well with 3D and i spent agessss playing it yesterday :) all the labels, tool bars and mouse seem to be on a layer that's jumping out of the screen at you! whilst also having a great depth of field at the player level too.... the monsters, scenery and spells look fantastic!!! again, takes a bit of a performance hit but nothing substantial, also read somewhere that you should turn off shadows as they don;t render properly in 3d? not so sure about that but i'll test when i get home.

Arma2 - didn't really get round to testing this but it's apparently pretty good... i imagine day-z will be a whole new level of pants filling in 3d xD but the performance hit i imagine could be quite bad as well... run it with almost everything maxed out so could get stuttery (another 680 it is then ;) ).

CS:GO - this i think was the least optimised for 3D (stating on the screen it's not officially supported, nor is it in the compatibility list). using some of the smallest increments of depth it does bring the game out of the screen a bit.... however, anything more and i found i wasn't shooting straight lol! something about it wasn't quite right... like the cross-hair didn't seem to be in place... and it also became very hard to see against the sandstone walls with the classic green look. so far i've only been adjusting the depth of field (ctrl f3/f4) but there are more things to play about with which could help (ctrl f5/f6...tho not sure what they do.... haha).

some issues i have encountered with the kit are:

....firstly the hard plastic arms of the glasses.... really wish these were more flexible. don;t get me wrong, they are comfortable on the nose and doesn't bother me wearing them.... if they are the only thing on your head.... where as if you are like me and use a headset.... it's a bit poo as the arms stop the cups from sealing around the ears and with that added pressure from the headset the ends dig in a little. my way around this was to just simply put the arms on the top edge of the cups. ok the glasses are at a bit of an angle to my eyes but so long as the glasses aren't at tooo silly an angle it doesn't affect the performance, also takes some of the weight to that helps a little.

secondly, a bit of background info. when you want to watch something in 3d e.g. a game, with the kit all set up, all ya should need to do if launch the game, as the game is loading, nvidia detects possible 3d content and enables the vision transmitter (the green light glows brighter), the monitor goes blank then comes back on with the 3D mode light shining, a quick tap of the side of the glasses and boom.... 3D schiznezzz!!!! :D

but unfortunately that isn't always the case. with diablo 3 it does everything except change monitor mode :\ the screen will have the stereoscopic image displayed but the monitor will be in 2D 120Hz mode. it will even come up with a message saying that it needs to be in that mode for the 3d to work... so i think fine,. i'll try disabling it and re-enabling it. ctrl+t and it puts the image back to normal.... but then the monitor goes into 3D mode? hummm.... ok? i'll just put 3D back on and it should work? ctrl+t again, image changes to stereoscopic... but then the monitor goes blank, comes back and it's back in 2d mode :p dammit!!!!!!! so far the work around for it is if i load up origin, then launch the game it will go into 3D mode no problem.

had a similar issue with CS:GO after i alt tabbed. at first it loaded up fine, but after i alt tabbed it switched which mode was active when i had 3d on :p but just closed the game and started again and it was fine.

so yea... little bit of a review and thoughts on these products :) not sure if it's for me yet but i have a little while longer yet before i have to decide about DSR as i am testing it atm.

also wondering what other games have people used this with and what were their results? anyone had similar issues to mine? anyone have any setting preferences? can i set up 3d profiles for each game does anyone know? ...should i ***** another 400 squids and go SLI for uber 3D FPS?

tl : dr - 3D vision is pretty funkay, works good in most games, not so great in others. solid product but glasses design could be altered. thoughts, opinions, tips?

To solve the digging-in I wear a baseball cap (though any hat/visor/etc. should do), the glasses then go around the outside of that at my ears, and can much more comfortably wear full headphones after that (this is with 3d vision 1 glasses which I believe are to be worse on this area).

Arma2 works OK but cross-hair and gunsight aiming leaves a lot to be desired, for multiplayer and DayZ I generally stopped using it, though it still is awesome for vehicles and flying the heli. Works best if you adjust convergence to be at screen-depth (so the 3d projects out from the screen to the wall behind it).

Diablo 3 - don't believe I bothered with the shadows, I live with them 'floating' a bit.

In games other than Arma2/DayZ I prefer having the convergence brought closer (so the 3D scene begins generating in front of the screen, passes through it, and extends a bit out of the back), and it's a bit annoying having to ctrl+f5 / ctrl+f6 to move it back and forth between games, but otherwise no problem really. Just a shame that those are globally tuned settings and not per-title.

Oh - the Diablo 3 thing not activating the glasses, is a driver bug. The latest 296.x ones were fine with it (but no FXAA), any of the 301.x or 304.x drivers have some issues going in/out of 3D properly.

With the latest greatest beta it's MOSTLY ok, except the first time I go into Diablo 3 I have to go to Option > Display and change from Full Screen to Windowed and Apply. As it switches to Windowed mode the 3D suddenly works, you then get asked to confirm in 15 seconds or it reverts automatically, at this point I hit No I don't want these settings, which switches me back to fullscreen again - but now the glasses are now active as they should have been. Cancel back out of there, should be fine.

I logged a bug with Nvidia about this already but they don't bother replying. (Still) waiting for their forums to come back online since hackage in June/July, as they seem slightly more responsive to problems in the 3D vision subforum there.

I had 3d vision 1 with an asus screen with my old 480sli system but found it not compatible with so many games and others having issues so really it only tends to work with games that are designed with it in mind like metro2033. The kind of games I was hoping to use it for like wow and rift as well as the dirt series and other racing games just do not work properly enough of the time to be worth bothering with. A new 3d system needs to be released that we can use with very nearly everything.

The absolute minute 3d goes 2560x1600 i'm there money in hand for a kit, monitor and couple more gfx cards.

Interesting read - playing GW2 is actually the first time I've been tempted to splash out on 3D gear - there are some underwater areas and elf cities with glowing floating particles that would probably look amazing.

Witcher 2 looks amazing, as does Metro2033. Black Ops looks pretty good as well as far as I can remember. The new glasses are far more comfortable than the old ones, they really hurt under headphones, I used to stick rolled up socks under the arms...lol.

thanks for the responses and glad some have enjoyed the read (i use the term 'enjoyed' loosely here :p )

@TopDog, that's not a bad idea about the cap! only problem is i have the PC-350 headset which is closed cup... if it doesn't have a good seal it loses air pressure and like alllll the bass.... :( and i know what ya mean.... aiming in FPS games feels weird... although the holo sight in BF3 looks awesome and like it's really infront of me xD

is the convergence the f5/f6 options? i think those are what i read about changing for FPS games maybe? as i've only played with f4/f5. nice tiop about diablo too :) i'll try that when i get home hehe :)

might raise a ticket with nvidia for 3dprofiles... i mean they have it for all the other global settings... so why not just add an extra few options:
1)3D when available
2)Depth
3)Convergence

surely it wouldn't be that hard to do :p

Just to add 2 more games to the list - Trine 2 looks fantastic in 3D and if you like racing games, F1 2011 works well too, particularly when combined with TrackIR. I find the bridge of my nose aches after a while, must try a different sized nose piece.

F3/F4 for depth, F5/F6 for convergence, F7 to save

In simple terms, depth controls how deep the shoebox you're looking into can go, convergence controls how close/far away that shoebox is, if you consider the entire 3d scene inside this 'box' as being your viewing area. No matter the game I've tended to stick with the same settings, Arma2 just gets a bit weird when you pull that shoebox out of the screen towards you, particularly around the screen edges, so for that I made an exception.

Make sure you've enabled the 'advanced keys' in the nvidia control panel on the 3d vision tab else convergence won't adjust (there's also no 'on screen' display when you adjust convergence, just have to press and hold until you see it move and then continue to adjust as desired).

If a cap is a problem, maybe some sort of head scarf instead, you just need something a bit softer and able to distribute the load better between the glasses and your bonce and it should make a good bit of difference. Mostly these days instead I cop out and just use in-ear phones.

Would like to add Sleeping dogs, which is my favourite game in 3D atm.
Looks simply beautiful in 3D, using settings like 15/15 Depth/Convergence ..

ahh cool, thanks for that explanation about the depth and convergence :) cleared things up a bit :) ....why don't they have on screen display for that xD just a vertical bar next to it xD i wish i knew how to code stuff like that... just edit the drivers a bit xD and adding a second scroll wheel to the transmitter unit or button so you don't get confused which is which.

and about the wearing them... would be awesome if they made like a clip on attachment for headsets much like TrackIR have :) could have a pivot point fixed to one or both sides so that it could swivel up and down much like a visor, also would be easy to make the arms telescopic like headset adjustments are. be very universal then and easy to move out of the way but keep them close.

but for now having the arms ontop of the cups is fine for me.... maybe i might get adventurous and try to make a prototype...
