3DMark 06 CPU Usage Oddities

Ok so I spent all day downloading 3DMark 06 to give it a try. I register it as a professional edition and start it up. I notice that the start up is taking a lot longer then 05 ever did. Then when I try to run the test it freezes my computer completely.

I thought that it might be a PSU issue so I decided to put my new Titan 550W PSU into my old dell case (bit of a squeeze seeing as it cant screw to the back but the case is already lying sideways as the heatsink is falling off the CPU but anyway...). With the new PSU I managed to get the tests to run and managed to get through the first two gfx tests and the first of the CPU tests (0-1fps wootage). Then it goes back out to checking system configuration and freezes.

That's just one of the oddities. I noticed that when I run 3DMark06 even before I try running the tests it is using a lot of the CPU power. I decided to restart the computer and take a look in Task manager at just what was happening as it started up.

First it takes up a full thread and leaves the second empty while it starts up which takes around 20 seconds then the program itself goes down to 1-2% usage but there is something in the background that is using 50% of both threads. It doesnt show up in the processes and the System Idle Process says that it is at 99% even though the graphs show the CPU usage to be oscillating wildly between 50 and 90% from this unknown process. I tried closing down 3DMark 06 but this had absolutely no effect on the phenomenon.

I took a screenshot of the graphs and managed to load paint up to paste it into then had to restart as the computer was slowed down so much.

Does anybody know why this would be happening? I have never seen a ghost process that uses up the CPU power but doesnt appear in the process manager. Here is the screenshot:

All I can suggest is...

http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html

Its written by Mark Russinovich the guy who discovered the Sony DRM Trojan, and it can pick up hidden processes. Hiding processes is a very common trick for Virus, and Trojans, but often they are only hidden from the standard windows task manager. Because sysinternals Process Explorer is '3rd Party' most programs are unable to hide from it.

Worth a try anyway. Good luck.

Thanks I'll give it a try. The unusual thing is that it only happens when 3D Mark 06 starts and even then not all the time. I downloaded it from Guru3D and I've gotten stuff from them before without any hassle.

After using Process Explorer I discovered that after startup the "Hardware Interrupts" jumps to 70-80% usage and doesn't go down again. Another interesting thing is that two cases of wmiprvse.exe start up with 3DM06. Could these be causing the problem? Does anybody here have an idea on how to help?

I ran spybot and it discovered a few add programs but nothing that I think would result in that kind of behaviour. I will test again later tonight. I don't feel like having to reboot again right now

A virus attached to an executable (like 3D Mark) will only be activated when the executable it is attached to is executed. Traditionally this is how a virus would spread - although most of the time it would leave the exe and start itself up with Windows once it was executed the first time.

Run a virus scan.
