3DMark thinks I have 7970?

Well. The 280x is a 7970, it has just been rebranded by AMD. So some programs might well see it as a 7970 although I would have expected 3D Mark to pickup the 280x properly. What does it say your card is in device manager? - some of the older AMD drivers will show it as a 7970 too (September/October drivers and previous)
 
Device Manager reports r9 200 series, so just a bug on 3DMarks end I guess. I'm running 14.2 betas atm. Was going to sell this one and put the extra cash towards an R9 290 as this 280X performs just around the same as my 7950 I had before it, is there a noticeable difference between the 280X and 290 non x?
 
7950's are not much behind a 7970 really,, and yes a much bigger jump from a 280x to a 290(non X) than from your old 7950 to a 280x
