So I have tried to run 3dmark vantag on my ATI 4870X2 and it just seems to artifact and crash my PC.

My current spec is

QX9650 @ 3ghz
Crappy Gigabyte GA-73PVM-S2 --- This is a temporary mobo
2gb ram --- temporary
Asus Tri Fan 4870X2
Coolermaster Modular Real Power 700W

As said above a lot of this is temporary just now, and I will put back my current parts once I get a proper mobo.

I read somewhere that the Motherboard can only support DX9 not DX10, I am thinking this is just marketing material though as the DX is dependant on OS and GPU (???)

Anyway the 3dmark06 runs perfectly (14k so far) but 3dmark Vantage artifacts and crashes.

Is this a common thing to happen with a crappy mobo or are there any other causes for the problems? Another possibility is that the ATI is trying to run Physx while benchmarking Vantage but even when I disable PPU it does the same thing.

Everything is running at Stock.

Temps of your 4870 x 2?

Artifacts normally mean gpu running faster than it can handle although I can make vantage artifact by overclocking mu cpu too far so I would check cpu temps as well.

Test using prime95, occt etc.

For good measure test your ram as well.

Temps of the graphics was 50c load. Graphics card was running at stock and fan speed set to between 60 and 70.
Cpu 56load.
I ran memtest for a couple of hours and it was fine. I will try prime tonight.

I just find it strange that 3dmark06 ran fine.

14k on 3D Mark 06 seems really low to me as i acheive nearlly 16k with my setup.

I'd hazzard a guess that your motherboard is what is at fault

Well yeah, I only have 2GB ram (usually 4 - 6gb) in just now and the motherboard is temporary. So that will reduce the score by a lot.

Oh yeah and this was with 1920 by 1080 and maxed out settings at this res. Which is probably another reason for only being 14k.
