Hey folks;

So, the brief story is, I bought an XFX 8800GT XXX Edition, used it in my machine and had the problem;

3dmark06 kept either;

Hanging at the firefly test at the end
Black screening at the end of the CPU test
Hanging when the balloon thing flies off into the sunset at the end.

I managed to get it to work ONCE til the end to display score.

I thought it was a faulty card, and returned it, as my friends was fine, his setup is very similar except his PSU is a bit more powerful (800W Tagan).
He uses the same drivers, the only difference being he had an Nvidia card before this also.

I purchased a Gainward 8800GT GS edition, and today tried 3dmark06 and the same thing happened! It black screened at the end of the CPU test!

The temps are fine, 42 at idle, under graphical load i've seen in the 50's.

Ignore my sig for the overclock, as my Q6600 is running at standard.

I've done a memtest, all seems ok.

Drivers are the official 169.21's on the Nvidia website.
Windows XP 32-bit.

Surely it is not PSU related? As when I put my X1950 Pro 512MB card in, it runs fine, and surely that uses more power than the 8800GT?

I just can't seem to think of what it could be? I even used drivercleaner in safe mode when I removed ATI drivers etc.

Any ideas? :(

is your pc stable and fine the rest of the time? in games and such?

Use rivatuner to access the fan option and set to 100% speed and see if it crashes again. That'll prove that it is or isn't localised temp increases

When I set fan to 100% it still did it.

tbh, with my last card, the XFX one, I actually UNDERclocked it below stock speeds with 100% fan and it still crashed.

I do plan on putting Vista on in the next couple of weeks, but the fact it works fine with my ATI card seems strange...Does the 8800GT use more power than a X1950 Pro?

My prime suspects are;

PSU
Driver problem...

The Nvidia control panel 'stability test' doesn't run either.

When I click 'start' it just does nothing, then the button changes back to 'start' again.

It doesn't crash or blue screen, just basically doesnt work!

I uninstalled and re-installed the drivers, still does it...

Could a PSU issue cause this?
