3Dmark06 not much point for 8800 ?

Having just had 2x7800gtx and now 8800gts, I'm finding benchmarks not much different, even though the 8800gts is a LOT faster in new games.

Considering the 8800 has no trouble with all dx9 games, is there any point using a dx9 score to show how fast the card is? Is that like timing a Porsche in a straight line only?

How about a dx10 score like from the new 'Cascades', say take the fps when is starts or something? I know not everyone has vista or a dx10 card so maybe I'm thinking too far ahead?

Ps. I've noticed some 'core 2' peeps getting around 2000cpu score 3dmk06, which is the same as my old AMD @2.7, what confuses me is that sisoft sandra reports a fx62 as being a LOT slower than 'core 2', is there any point upgrading from AMD unless you're going high end 'core 2'?

The power of G80 cards can only be seen on games.

Also the 8800GTS = 7950GX2 = 2x7900GTs = 2x7800GTXs

All of these offer practically the same performance. The only difference being with the 7950GX2 being 2x7900GTs in a single card (DON'T REPLY TO THIS) solution and the 8800GTS being a single GPU.

I think 8800gts be quicker than all previous cards in new games inc 7950gx2, or maybe im bios -skint now lol

Yeah it is quicker.

But not by a great margin. But the fact it's as fast is amazing enough, as it's a single GPU compared to the two of the SLI and GX2.

Not really. Though high end should also include any seriously overclocked core 2 processor. Anything of an equal clock or higher than your current AMD's speed should be enough.

In regards your graphics card upgrade, I think the reason that there is so little difference in some benchmarks, compared to games, is that most benchmarks, the 3dmarks in particular, are highly optimised for dual card performance. Games generally show less of an improvement.

Technologies like SLI will always excel in synthetic benchmarks like 3dmark, where they often show gains up to 80%. In games the gains are usually much less unless using ridiculous settings.
