First time noob build here.

I tested my new system in 3dMark06 and all was going well until it got to the CPU test, it was going like 1 FPS and looked terrible. Being a noob im not really sure if this is a problem? It seems like it should have been going more than 1 FPS.

System specs :-

Q6600 @ stock (2.40)
Arctic cooling freezer pro 7 cooler
Asus p5k pro Intel P35
Radeon 4870
corsair 620 Watt power
Antec 900 case
crap 120GB HDD ive got while waiting on an RMA

Ive looked at other threads and done all the suggested tests, pictures :-

3dMark06 results :-

I ran the Winrar benchmark thing with CPU-z running and coretemp to check everything was okay :-

Also dont know is this is related or not but i have a strange graphical problem during game intro cinematics mostly, sometimes in game, its like a wierd flickery line across a random bit of the screen for like a split second, but it can happen for like 5 secs at a time randomly flickering.

ive done my best to replicate it for an example :-

Kinda like half the screen moves across for a spilt second, its really annoying.

Any comments or suggestions will be extremely appriciated as i am a bit of a noob first time builder.

I didnt think the HDD could make much of a difference in this kind of test?

besides its not that bad, its a 1.5 sata drive i think?

yes sorry, drivers version 8.7 think thats up to date.

so i take it i should be getting more that 1FPS in the CPU test?
(shows how much of a noob i am :P)

thanks for all the great replys guys.

I am glad to hear that the CPU is okay.

any thoughts about the graphical flicker?

is catalyst 8.7 up to date?

I seem to be having trouble clearing and updating my drivers, could anyone give me a quick run-through?

I havent tried Vsync but i will as soon as i get these drivers sorted.

EDIT: I installed the 8.8 drivers but the catalyst control center wont seem to start. any ideas why?

sounds just like good old fashioned screen tearing. have you tried turning vsync on in game ?

You sir are a genius, installed 8.8 drivers but they didnt stop it, went in game and turned on vsync and it fixed it, thank you very much.

Could you possibly tell me what vsync is or what it does, so that i can understand what the problem was better? Also is there some way i can turn it on permanently for everything?

Thank you everyone for you help, it is very much apprieciated.

I was at 1680 x 1050 when i ran the test.

havent tried any overclocking yet, just waiting a bit to break the system in sorta thing.

as i said i havent ever done anything like this before so im just trying to get my bearings.
