Hi

My kids currently have DS`s, 2 years old this xmas. They play them a lot, Im thinking would it be worth getting them 3DS`s for xmas this year.

Girl 8
Boy 6 1/2

So is the 3DS worth the money and upgrade.

Thanx in advance

I'd get um one each :D The new toy on the market is always a want at their age :D

Probably best looking at some respected review places. But from what I have heard they are good.

I didn't get one because of the lack of decent titles out on launch.

I'm aware there are more and better ones coming out around Christmas / New Year though.

Ok so not that many good games out at the momment. But if I get them it for xmas (1 each). They will have it ready for better games, and they can still play their old games.

6 weeks to go till xmas, so looking to buy them within a couple of weeks. Im confussed buy or not to buy.

they dont tell you this but it does come with a health warning for young kids, the 3D could really hinder there eyes and cause them problems later on in life!

just be aware of that

If there aren't many games to play, and they already have a DS (I assume since you said can play their old games) then why not get them something else?

The price isn't going to come down any time soon because they had to drop it larger and faster than anyone expected.

You can parental lock them so they can't use the 3D, or can only use it for a limited length of time.

Also I found that a lot of games just look better without 3D anyway (Zelda for one).

It is required for some parts of mario land.

I dont really play mine very often, i play my girlfriends son's dsi xl a lot more, i think they should have made the screen a wee bit bigger for the 3ds, its my main gripe with it.

There's still a handful of great games to choose from. I think a 3DS and Mario would make an awesome gift.

Do they need more than a couple of games to share? When I was a growing up I only got the one game with my new console/handheld at xmas and that only made me appreciate that game more. My nephews both have DS's with 20 games or so and they haven't completed one of them! They're an embarrassment.

Edit: Mario Kart 7 (released Dec 2nd) and Mario Land 3D (released 18th Nov) will pretty much make the best xmas present you could ever buy a game loving child. If that is too much Mario for them to handle get Star Fox.

My 8 year old 2nd cousin got one. She played it about 10mins and promptly threw up. Hasn't touched it since...

I used to feel really sick when I first played Goldeneye. I persisted with it because the game was just too good and it disappeared in time. You should force her to play it, tough love.

First time i had motion sickness was Turok, total nightmare, there is no way i could power through it, the 3d effect is different thought and can do your eyes in.

Im not sure i would want my kids looking at one for a while, god knows what damage it could do.

Maybe it could be used as an alternative form of punishment.

"If you don't tidy your room, you'll have to play Mario in 3D."

Haha, ace! :p

They do tell you this, it's in the manual, on the box and it tells you on the console its' self. Realistically there isn't going to be a problem, I'm pretty sure that was confirmed by some opticians society, they're required to let people know that there's the slight risk, but if you knew about the risks with everything you'd probably stay inside wrapped inside a sheet of bubble wrap. Well, not bubble wrap, that may be a choking hazard.

If you're that scared you can even disable the 3D effect permanently, until you go back into the options and change it with a passcode. Designed exactly for parents who think that playing on a 3D console will make their kids go blind.

Excellent little console, perhaps without sounding slightly sexist it's not really a girls console yet, unless she enjoys Mario, Mario Kart or Zelda I'm not sure she'd enjoy it that much at the moment with very little games aimed towards girls, perhaps nintendogs.

Your son however with the above as well as Dr Lautrec, Lego, Starfox, Zelda, Mario, street fighter it's a better choice.

Personally at their current age I see no reason why you should upgrade from the DS, I personally wish I didn't get it so early as the DS has a lot more games to choose from and is still a great console, despite being a Nintendo nerd. :D

Up to you, but I can only reiterate what others have said, December will make the 3DS have more appeal.

Well my 2 are age 8 and 5 same situation as yourself eldest had a DS and used it when she had it a fair bit and really wanted a 3DS so she had one for her birthday in August.

The 3D lasted about a day until she turned it off because "it was easier to play with the 3D off". She now uses it as much as she used the DS and to be honest was it worth the upgrade NO NOT AT ALL.

So anyway, youngest wants one because eldest has one, but I was not willing to get one due to the big warning on them about children under the age of 6 and 3D but with the recent price cut on trade in against a DS which makes the DS £50 the EX got one for him I put the password on and he plays it without 3D enabled. That was on the 5th on November has he played it anymore then the DS - nope, waste of money - Yep.

I got to be honest the kids see shiny and new without realising that infact there is no difference between a 3ds and a ds. To the point that it's actually boring withing the first day as it offers nothing new bar a 3D screen that gets turned off after the first few hours of play anyway.

I call it iPhone syndrome shiny and new but years out of date already. :D
