I know they're completely different but I'm itching on getting a new toy, never had a wii or DS so have never played any of the nintendo exclusives, that's mainly what it'll be used for

made the choice of getting a PS Vita over a 3DS last year.....was set on getting a wii U but interest tailed off after it was launched, still looks smart tho...

3DS is your best bet right now as it has some great games coming out this year and you have a ton of awesome DS games you can play too. Make sure you get the XL though, the bigger screens and better feel make a huge difference from what I've heard.

I have a personal preference of home consoles, so I'd choose the wii u. However from the looks of it you might be playing wii exclusives for some time (Which is no bad thing, lots of good zelda games etc)

I highly recommend wii u - I'm really enjoying mine - Zombi U, Sonic Racing, Batman, Nintendoland, BlackOps 2 and Darksiders 2 are all very good.
There are currently loads of good deals on the games.
Plus you can play all the library of good Wii Games (Sports/Sports Resort, Galaxy 1+2, Xenoblade, Resident Evil 4, Excite Trucks, Mario Kart, etc).

As you mention never having had a Wii I assume you plan to play Wii games on the Wii U. If that is the case, definitely a Wii U. U games are not looking good right now, but in a year that will hopefully change.

Wii U. Old Wii games are numerous, excellent and inexpensive. Mario Galaxy to Xenoblade Chronicles, the exclusives are so worth it. Can't really recommend any Wii U games as must haves, ZombieU is fun, but far from an essential play.

Another option, 3DS and Wii perhaps? Same cost as a Wii U. Our 3DS systems are seeing plenty of use since last Christmas with the new Layton, Tales of the Abyss, Super Mario 3D etc. I've got a regular 3DS and the missus a 3DS XL, try both before you buy, the screen blockiness of the XL puts some people off, but it can be worth the sacrifice if the system fits your man hands better.
