I think I will try numbering the sticks and swapping positions around to see
if it makes any difference.

I tried it again this morning and yet again it showed only 4G , I let it try and load
windows and it BSOD just as windows was loading :-(

I should have just stuck with the 3G of corsair stuff , even tho I got the G.Skill
20 cheaper than normal price.....

Did the problem move with the module or did it remain constant in the same slot?

Hi YellowBeard,
Thanks for replying , I swapped the sticks around and the first cold boot the PC
would not even post , it tried 3 times then fell back to default clocks , I then loaded the bios profile and restarted and it worked ok. This leads me to think
that one of the sticks is a bit dodgy ? or is that a wrong assumption?

I will cold boot it later on see if I can ID which stick is not responding

So I will try adjusting some of the voltages when I get home today.

Update:

Tried upping the QPI/VTT voltage and this really screwed things up big time
The PC would now reboot itself before windowsd even finished loading
I tried several different V's with no sucess

I lowered my overclock to 3.6G ( 180 x 20 ) from its original 3.88G ( 185 x 20 + boost switched on )

So I decided to check the SPD table on the ram and I had set the ram voltage
to 1.65 (which was tagged as the 1000Mhz voltage) , I then noticed that
for 667Mhz the voltage was tagged as 1.5V , since Iam operating at 740Mhz
I lowered the ram voltage to 1.5V , did some power cycles and all is well.

I even did a 17hour memtest without any problems , so as Yellowbeard
pointed out in his post , the difference between the 2 voltages can have an effect

Woo Hoo , I will try upping my Overclock later on and do some more testing
Thanks for the help guys :-)

err I spoke too soon :-( .... ( the [censored] ram is still giving issues

Did 17 hours memtest and all seemed well , today did a cold boot and the
damn stuff is knackered again , I left the PC running this morning with win 7 64 bit
testing it with linx and it lasted 3 hours before rebooting itself :-(
This was at Stock speeds without any overclock

Think I will have to spend some time working through one thing at a time
eliminating things as I go.
THe stuff is rated to 2Gig , I would be happy to get it working at 1600 without
it falling on its arse

asking because I keep hearing about cold boot issues with gigabyte boards. Have you tried everyting at stock for awhile to see if the problem is reproduced? I have 12gb running in an asus p6td v1, mixed kingston and ocz gold 1333 rated stuff, the rig id clocked at 3.6 for 24/7 use and so far it's not skipped a beat.

At stock everything is fine , cold boot no problem all ram detected , passess memtest

IF I overclock it , starts once doesnt post switches off , starts again doesnt post
it then starts again in default non overclock settings
IF I go into bios then reload my overclock profile and save and restart
the PC boots fine with the overclock and all is well

With my old ram 3 x 1G sticks it boot fine everytime with a 3.9G overclock
With my new ram 3 x 2G sticks it buggers up every cold boot with any overclock (current 3.2G)

Does that memory have an XMP memory profile? if so try it... don't set things manually or leave it at auto.

In my experience when a stick of memory is not being detected during post it is down to overclocking it too far or using too aggressive timings.

Maybe some of the other timings are too aggressive or you just have a bad stick. :(

Hi I have the exact same problem, using the same RAM, i currently have an ASUS 6ptd deluxe (2nd one) 1st RMA for this reason but had exact same problem,so not the board. I only have this issue on a cold boot and if i swich off and back on again i get all 6gig mem.

Have done a lot of research since Sept on this and we are not alone, I dont think it is the memory, board or cpu and this it is an X58 issue in general, I have just come to live with it, I have my system running stable at i920do 4ghz 1.3v 6gig (1.66v @1600 7-7-7-20) so am happy, just this cold boot issue missing 1 stick of ram but switching on and off again and the issue is resolved.

I have tried everything to fix this with no joy and dont know the cause. oh well, if anyone has any ideas please help.

Having RAM timings set to tight can cause this, also not having enough QPI/Vtt can cause this issue as well.

Bent pins in the CPU socket can cause similar problems, although with bent pins, it will more than likely only ever see 4GB out of 6GB all the time, and not just on cold boots..

Still though, it might be worth inspecting your CPU socket just incase there are any bent pins in there.

I've also heard of people reseating their CPU's and the problem clearing up to.

I spent about 3 months stressing out over the same problem, although my system would only ever see 4GB, I ended up getting my processor replaced, and I haven't had the issue since.
