Ok,

I got myself the 2gb geil and i pluged it in with my 1gb dual channel geil.

So far all benchmarks and a few games run ok with no issues.

Can the motherboard take it? or will this damage it in the long term?

Im not to fuss about performance as i do a lot heavy 3D modelling and rendering.

I install the memory as A1 slot 512, B1 = 1GB, A2 = 512, B2 = 1GB.

cheers for any tips,

Alex

I don't think it'll be a problem though mixing different RAM will probably mean it's not running in Dual Channel.

Each bank only contains one type of same RAM though - 2*512 dual channel kit in one bank and 2*1024 dual channel kit in the other bank.

Is 3gig really necessary?

Very much so. I work as an independant 3d animator and my rendering rig using 8GB's of memory. It is a very intense environment for any machine to work in.

SGI machines (£££) can be pre-configured with 16GB's of RAM.

Actually cpuZ is telling me that is runing in DUal channel mode. is this right ?

Im mixing at the moment as i didnt know, so basically if i keep the 2x512 in A1,B1 and the other 1gb sticks on A2,B2 on my asus an8 mobo.

I wasnt planing on 3Gb but my first pair of geil has been runinng very well since i bought it. Only issue i can see is that this is new sticks. The 1gb duo was made in wk 24, 2005 while the 512 sticks are from wk 2, 2002.

and yes 3 gb is needed when trying to model in cinema4d. ;)

Sorry too but in, but i am wondering if i will benefit from 3gb. I do a lot of 3dsmax, combustion and other various software. I currently have 2gb of Geil value ram and i have 2 x 512mb of OCZ spare at work. Should i bother trying it or will i not get any noticable improvement?
