Hi

This may sound like a stupid question but I never hear anyone mentioning they have 3gb of ram, is there a reason for this. I currently have 1gb, But am thinking of buying some corsair 4400 2gb (2x 1gb Ram). I sthis ok?

Thanks

It'd destroy dual channel and most likely mean you have to run on 2T timings which'll decrease performance again. It'll probably be slower having 3GB and less bandwidth than just having 2GB. Wait until at least this summer for more RAM upgrading.

:Edit: Read it again and saw you only have 1gb. Just get another 1gb stick, that'll do you nicely with a bit of a performance boost from dual channel + the extra space.

What Solac means is he has 2x 512 sticks at the moment (1 gb) is it worth him adding the 2x 1gig sticks or using them to replace and keep with 2 sticks. The answer is still to keep with 2 sticks, your old ram is worth keeping towards another machine or pop on the MM :)

is dual channel that big of a boost? im in a similar situation having 2x512mb and thinking of getting two more sticks

Dual channel is about 5% on average. Up to you if that makes a big enough difference or not. The extra will help with games that cache a lot of data to drive, this slows things down more than the 5% drop. Up to you but its a balance of those, personally id sell the 1GB and buy a 2gig kit :)

I've found the crazy RAM configs have caused me a few problems in the past especially with games like WoW. Im only running one stick of Geil Value 2GB stuff (due to power supply meltdown) and i think the difference is noticable.

Clear the old stuff out and get 2 Gig Junk!

im currently testing this right now as i type. main pc is running 2 x 1gb sticks and 2 x 512mb sticks. checking to see if bandwidth is the same and if dual channel is still in operation.

from what i have seen the sandra scores show that the bandwidth efficiency is higher when timings are higher rather then looser timings and higher clock speeds.
