3gb ok?

hi,

bit of a n00b question, but i have 2 x 1gb sticks in an nforce 4 msi mobo at the moment, i have another 2 x 512mb stick laying about. it is the same kind of ram, just smaller

question is, can i run with all 4 sticks = 3gb or am i better off sticking with 2gb?

(i am at work so cant check the manual.)

If its the same timings then I dont see why it would cause any problems, then again is it really worth it? 2GB is more than enough for current games etc.

Yes it would work but remember it wont be running in dual channel which can hit performance a little. It wouldn't be so bad if some applications actually used 3gb (Apart from ridiculous image editing and rendering) but hardly anything does so I'd say overall it'll decrease your performance.

Dont think 2x1gig & 2x512mb will let you run in dual channel mode, also and I`m not 100% sure on this you may have to run 2T mode because all memory slots are full. Another thing to keep in mind is that some cpu memory controllers drop the ram to 333 instead 400 if their are 4 dimms.

Your best bet would be to just use 2xgig in dual channel mode running 1T.
