3GB vs 4GB

Hey guys
I'm running Windows 7 64bit but i'm stuck in a situation. I've currently got 2x1gb XMS3 and my brother's PC has 2x2gb XMS3. Both are the DHX version. I'm not sure whether i should swap one of the 1gb sticks for a 2gb from the other computer or just buy more RAM. Would i notice a big difference between 3gb and 4gb?

I mostly just play games, surf the internet and run linux in a virtual machine. Running linux is pretty much impossible to do under 2gb RAM without my computer going crazy and my brother's computer is off limits most the time. But it's just used for surfing the internet. I've considered dual booting but right now don't have the time to set it up.

The other problem is that my motherboard is a GA-MA770T-UD3P and i've installed a Noctua NH-U12P SE2 which is taking up 2 RAM slots. Since both my computers have the DHX version, the heatsinks are pretty big. I was thinking if i got the normal XMS3, would it fit under the heatsink? Also while i know mixing RAM isn't preferred would it be okay to run the normal xms3 with the DHX version?

Thanks!
