Hi all,

A friend of mine has stated that because he has got himself a quad core processor running at 3 Ghz he now in theory has a 12 ghz o processing power, Is this correct? i was under the impression that he still only has 3Ghz of processing power but can run 4 processing threads at 3Ghz?

You are correct.
Unless the program can utilize all four cores it will not use 12ghz of processing power.
I think some games utilize four cores, am not sure about programs though.

When talking to the technically challenged I like to use the example of cars - does owning four, four seater saloon cars each capable of 100mph mean you can drive at 400mph ?

But having four cars will mean transporting twelve people may be a lot easier (drivers permitting, if you excuse the pun) than with a 400mph supercar.

Lol...your friend should go and work for the console manufacturers....

They love coming out with stuff like that to convince the plebs they are getting something which is so...

...ZOMG!!!...LIKE..UBER POWERZ....

I mean, the PS3 was a 2 Teraflop rated console back in 2005.......they dont lie do they?...:)

Yet it still cant run a game at 720p with a solid 60fps in about 90% of releases......

It is 4 cores at 3GHz each. That does not become 12GHz, you what you say is totally correct.

I love how people get sucked into that idea :p Would be nice if it was like that, then I would have 16GHz to work with :D

That's a good analogy

damn that is a long time since i heard that theory, i remember when they came out with the dual core everyone thought they had double speed, all that mean is that each threads would be running at the clk speed specified, if i am wrong please let me i know, but i am sure i am correct...

TBH I think ye both mean the same thing. 'In theory' a quadcore at 3Ghz will do the same amount of processing as a single core at 12Ghz if the process is threaded. In fact the quadcore might be faster than a single core in some situations as it doesn't require the threads to be switched which can be expensive.

how do they get away with that....trading standard need to sort that out, as that would fall advertisting

This used to cause me endless troubles in my previous employment, I used to work for a company that would repair and replace damaged IT equipment through household insurance, Many people complained when the computer i replaced theirs with was only 3ghz when their one was 6ghz (dual core 3ghz), Funnily enough i also used a similar analogy to the car one when explaining, Also as soon as they said "but i had a 6Ghz Computer" that it was one purchased from the bay.

If you had a 980X overclocked to 4.5ghz, that makes 54ghz.

Suddenly my 965BE feels really, really inadequate.

hah! my mate did the exact same thing couple years ago, got a PC from a local computer shop claiming to be 'AMD dual-core, double the power of single core and a whopping 5!Ghz' also had in the description 'with revolutionary, lightning fast X1600 Pro Crossfire from ATI, delivering the ultimate gaming performance', needless to say he payed £900 or there abouts for a crappy PC with dual-core athlon X2, generic unbranded memory and two X1600 pro graphics cards! :( told him not to as well, but hes not very 'tech savvy' so doesn't really understand half this stuff, still its basically misleading people to say **** like that in your product description.
