I have an Abit Fatal1ty FP-IN9 SLI Motherboard, i just brought 2x 1gigs Gell Ram same as i had before.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-058-GL&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=

I can install 3gigs (3x1 gig sticks) and it boots but when i put in 4th it doesnt boot, i tried swapping the memory over and still doesnt boot with 4gigs but does again with 3gigs.

My motherboard says it supports more than 4gigs.

*4 X 240-pin DIMM sockets support max. memory capacity 32GB
Supports Dual channel DDR2 800/667/533 Un-buffered Non-ECC memory *

Do i need a bios update of something?

Version Windows?

Depends on the version of windows you are running.

Windows Vista 64
Windows XP 64

And more can run more than 4GB of memory, Likely you have a 32-bit version of windows, In which case it cannot run more than 3.5 GB, It's the OS's capability at that.

Check which windows you have, And It's either upgrade to 64 or return them or save em.

Up your northbridge (MCH) voltage by 0.1v to boost it for 4 sticks.

do this.

bear this in mind, but its NOT your current issue :)

its ok i found it and i got 4gigs running now, but as XP 32bit and Vista 32bit show its showing 3.2gigs.

I heard that there is a Service Pack out very shortly for Vista too that might fix this.

I just installed Vista for 1st time today and working well at moment.

A service pack cannot make a 32bit version of XP or Vista fully utilize 4gb of installed system memory . You will need a 64bit OS to do this.

Vista SP1 is on WU from today (18th), it will let Vista32 show you cosmetically 4GB in your Sys Props, you will still only have use of 3-3.5GB of Memory out of your 4GB.
