I'm pretty sure that cccp codec pack or klite codec pack will do the job (I can't test just now, cos I'm not on a windows box - but a quick google will tell you!) Both use pretty much the same codecs
mpc is the best option, use that with quicktime alternative and ffdshow, then you can edit pretty much any video type on your pc, whereas if you used vlc, then you'd need to install ffdshow (or individual codecs) to edit/view the videos in any other program
if you press ctrl + 0, you can remove the title bars from mpc, which makes it super slim looking, it loads up instantly too
